Isaac Stewart Benefiel was born in Porter county, Indiana, April 30, 1827; died at his home in Howard, Kansas, April 2, 1911, age 83 years, 11 months and 2 days.

He enlisted in Company B, 87th Indiana Infantry Vet. Volunteers, January 1, 1864.  He marched with Sherman to the sea, and served in the civil war till peace was declared.

He was married to Sarah J. Dukes of Pulaski county, Indiana, Janurary 14th, 1866.  In 1869 he moved to Elk county, Kansas, where he has lived most of the time since.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Benefiel and four children; E. R. Benefiel and W. F. Benefiel of Independence, Kansas, Maggie Dyer of Springfield, Missouri, and Nellie Carr of Thayer, Missouri; also by five step children, Mary Bright and Lucy Sherman of Howard, Kansas, O. P. Benefiel of Sheridan, Wyoming, Clara Kroff of Fonda, Oklahoma, and L. C. Benefiel of Augusta, Oklahoma.

Mr. Benefiel joined the M. E. church at the age of 20, and remained a faithful member until his death.  He was also a member of the E. M. Stanton G. A. R. Post, who laid him to his final rest.

The funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. T. A. Nichols, his pastor.
