Mildred L. (Ward) Clanton, age 96, a resident of Severy, Kansas, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Eureka Nursing Center in Eureka, Kansas.  Mildred was born on March 23, 1913 in Howard, Kansas, the daughter of George and Florence (Schillinger) Nitsche.

She was united in marriage to Edward William Ward, and to this union two children were born.  Edward preceded her in death in 1967.  She married Michael Clanton, and he preceded her in death in 1977.  Mildred was a member of the Church of th Nazarene in Severy, Kansas.  She was a 4-H leader and a Caravan Leader, working with children in the church.

Mildred is survived by one son, George E. Ward of Wichita, Kansas; one daughter, Venus J. Ward of Prairie Village, Kansas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; two brothers, Carl Nitsche and Loren Nitsche; and one sister, Marie Benton.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the Church of the Nazarene in Severy, Kansas with Pastor Dave Warren officiating.  There is no formal visitation.  Interment will be at South Lawn Cemetery. Family suggests contributions to either the Church of the Nazarene or the KU Endowment Association Voos Memorial Scholarship Fund and may be left with the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.countrysidefh.com.  Arrangements are under the direction of Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard, Kansas.
