DOWN IN THE DUMPS

Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence.  Psalm 42:5

When I was about six-years-old, I saw a city dump for the very first time. I was blown away by all the piles of trash, debris, and food garbage concentrated in one place. As we got out of the car to look around, my dad told me to watch out for rats. Yikes! I was glad when we left that place. It seemed depressing, even to a six-year-old.

WHERE ARE YOU LIVING THESE DAYS?

Can you imagine having to live at the city dump? Can you imagine spending the night with the garbage and the flies and the rats and the roaches? YUK! No one wants to live at the dump.

But the truth is this: a good number of you reading this e-mail are living in an emotional dump right now. Life has hit you between the eyes. You feel so overwhelmed, misunderstood, used, abused, and forgotten. You are filled with depression, discouragement and dread. You believe things are really terrible in your life, and you feel as if you are never going to experience better days. You have trouble seeing the bright side of anything. Every time you look out on the horizon, all you see is more trash.

TIME TO MOVE OUT

I know a lot about the emotional dump. I have spent more time there than I would like to admit. (In fact, I was just there for a good part of Wednesday morning!) When I get down, sing the blues and have a pity party, the Lord always reminds me of my problem. You see, dump dwellers tend to look out - and just see more trash, more depressing circumstances. What they need to do is LOOK UP and get their eyes on the Lord!

The psalmist in Psalm 42 had a strong talk with his depressed soul. He grabbed his soul by the scruff of the neck and said, "Listen here, soul. I am not going to keep despairing. I am not going to keep looking out. I am going to start looking up and put my hope in God!"

God is the One who can calm the raging storm. God is the One who can turn things around with a word. God is the One who can make a way where there seems to be no way. God is the One who can heal the sick, raise the dead, and make an immediate difference no matter how bleak the circumstances. Put your hope in Him, and praise Him for His presence in your life!

Moving today can be today for you if you will get your eyes off your problems and onto the problem-solver. The song says it best, "Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace."

Love,

Today, I want to make a difference.
Here I am Lord, use me!

DON'T DESPAIR

Why are you in despair, O my soul?  Psalm 42:11

My favorite Old Testament person is David. He was such a special guy. He was the only man in the Bible to have been given the wonderful moniker of "a man after God's heart." I love David's faith and passion for the Lord as evidenced when he faced off with the blaspheming giant, Goliath of Gath, and defeated him with a sling shot and a stick. I love his tenderness and grace as he dealt so lovingly with Jonathan's crippled son, Mephibosheth. And I love his honesty as he shares the struggles of his life in vivid detail throughout the book of Psalms.

Even in the midst of great discouragement, in the midst of enemies all around him, in the midst of King Saul trying his best to kill him, David clung to the promises of God. He knew he had been anointed by God to be the next king of Israel. Although at times that promise must have seemed more like a pipe dream, David held to it despite all the obstacles before him.

As far as I am concerned, Psalm 27:13-14 are two of the most encouraging verses in the Bible as David says, "I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord." David believed he would see the goodness of God in his lifetime. He believed he would see the great promises of God fulfilled in his days. AND HE DID!

BELIEVE AND WAIT

What are you and I to do when we face discouraging circumstances? What are we to do when everything inside of us says, "Things are terrible and not going to get better - just DESPAIR!"? Take hold of God's promises and wait on Him to come through. Take courage in the fact that God sees where you are, He knows what you are going through, and He cares for your soul. He has a wonderful plan for all those who will trust in Him and go His way.

AND REMEMBER THIS

God is always working behind the scenes. Even when you think He is asleep in the boat, the truth is He is working in ways you cannot see and do not know. Instead of speaking and praying words of doubt, unbelief and despair, start speaking and praying words of faith. Pray this type of prayer:

"God, even though I cannot see You doing anything in my dark situation, I know by faith that You are working on my behalf. I am one day closer to seeing a major breakthrough in these great problems of mine. I praise You that I AM going to see Your goodness manifest itself in my life before too long. I choose to wait on You; and I take courage in Your matchless presence and wonderful promises!"

You are NOT going to live permanently in the valley of the shadow of death. You are coming out of that valley one day soon - perhaps today! Believe it, receive it and begin now to make your celebration plans. Good things always come to those who faithfully wait on the Lord.

Love,

BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE

But Moses said to the people, "Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the LORD which He will accomplish for you today."
Exodus 14:13

Have you ever been between a rock and a hard place? That place is not where we like to be. That place feels like a no-win kind of place.

When I was called into the ministry, my wife Debbie did NOT want that for us. Her dad was a pastor. She had grown up in that "fish bowl" environment. She had experienced her dad always being gone because church matters and church members took him away from home so many nights each week. She said, "Jeff, I never would have married you had I thought you would go into the ministry. I do not want this for my children and me. You don't know what it is really like, but I do."

She continued, "Jeff, you have put me in a no-win situation. I am damned if I do and damned if I don't. If I try to keep you from doing what God wants you to do, you will be miserable, and I will, therefore, be miserable. And if I go with you into the ministry, I will once again be miserable because you will always be gone and our girls will grow up like I did." Debbie felt like she was between a rock and a hard place. Can you relate to that feeling?

GOD LIKES THAT PLACE

While we do not like being between a rock and a hard place, God likes it when we get there. In fact, He often leads us there in order to do His greatest work in our lives.

When God brought His ancient people out of Egypt, He led them to the shores of the Red Sea. Pharaoh had let them go as a result of all the plagues, but because of his pride and hard heart, he went back on his decision and came after Israel with a vengeance.

Here was the picture: God's people had the Red Sea in front of them and Pharaoh and his armies behind them. They could not go forward, and they could not go back. They were between a rock and a hard place. Death and destruction seemed certain. They cried out in fear, despair and complete faithlessness. No doubt, as Pharaoh witnessed this event, he said with a chuckle, "Moses' God is not much of a general. He has led His people to a dead-end." Oh really, great Pharaoh?

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GOD'S GREATEST MIRACLE

Pharaoh did not realize that Moses' God could part the sea. The people of God did not believe that was possible either. But God told Moses to stretch out his staff over the sea and have the people go forward. As God's people stepped out in faith, the sea was parted. The rock was split, so to speak. God did His greatest Old Testament miracle in the midst of the worst of circumstances, in the very place where it seemed they could not win.

Are you between a rock and a hard place today? Is the Red Sea in front of you and the creditors behind you? Are you crying out in fear, despair and faithlessness?

TRUST GOD, OBEY GOD AND GO FORWARD. HE HAS THE POWER TO PART YOUR RED SEA! Your rock and a hard place experience is nothing more than God's perfect spot for a great miracle. Praise Him for the difficult circumstances you find yourself in today. And trust Him, no matter how dark, how bleak, how black, or how hopeless. There is nothing too difficult for God.

THE REST OF OUR STORY

Do you know what my wife did? She prayed about my call into the ministry. She sought the Lord and shared her heart and reluctance and frustration with Him. And God spoke to her about it and changed her heart. She was not gung-ho, but she was willing. And she willingly joined me in stepping out of the boat to walk on the water with Jesus.

Has it been easy? No. But it has been so worth it! Debbie and I praise God on a consistent basis that He placed a special call on our lives. We are so thankful we went forward in faith, and did not shrink back in unbelief and bitterness. We have seen God show up and show out in numerous Red Sea experiences. We know firsthand that He is able, no matter what!

Today, I want to make a difference.

PULLING OUT THE BIG GUNS

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.
2 Corinthians 10:3-4

I have a friend of mine who loves to hunt. He goes to Africa quite often to hunt big game. He has a powerful rifle, Nitro Express, that cost him a small fortune. Talk about a big gun - WOW! The bullets it shoots are huge. That gun can do some damage and stop a charging elephant in his tracks. You have to have a big gun when facing big game. Otherwise, you are dead meat.

BIG GUNS

Does God equip His people with big guns? Are do we simply face every battle with a slingshot and a stick, as David did with Goliath?

The weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh. We have BIG GUNS to fire at the enemy, but they are not the guns of this world.

PAUL AND SILAS USED BIG GUNS

Paul and Silas were in Philippi doing the will of God: exposing the deeds of darkness and preaching the Word of God without apology or compromise. In so doing, they faced serious opposition as the devil incited the people to come against them in a big way. Paul and Silas ended up beaten, bloodied, and imprisoned with their feet in the stocks (see Acts 16).

The devil, that fierce, roaring lion, seemed to have them in his grasp. They were down and out in Philippi. Or were they? At midnight, in the midst of great physical and emotional pain and demonically inspired adversity, Paul and Silas resisted the urge to gripe, complain, doubt and despair. Instead, they pulled out the big guns.

"But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them" (Acts 16:25)

Now I can see praying in that situation, but singing hymns of praise to God? WOW! That praise said to God, "No matter what, Lord, we know You are in control of this situation. We trust You, love You, and exalt Your name in the midst of our suffering because You alone are worthy."

BOOM! In response to their prayer and praise, God sent an earthquake that shook the house. God brought about a jailhouse rock! Lives were touched and changed for all eternity as the jailer and his whole household received Christ as Savior and Lord. Great rejoicing took place that night. And it all started because the big guns of prayer, praise, and faith were unleashed in that prison.

IN YOUR LIFE

My friend, do you find yourself in trouble today? Are you failing miserably? Is the devil charging at you full force? Are you afraid and don't know what to do? Have you been doing the will of God only to experience suffering and hardship because of it? Are you ready to throw in the towel and follow the terrible advice of Job's heartbroken wife who said to Job, "Curse God and die!"?

It's time to pull out the big guns! It is time to start praying, praising, and believing God. Your "jailhouse rock" is coming. Don't give up! Don't despair! Don't quit! There is great power in prayer and praise. Satan hates it when we pray, and he can't handle the praise and faith.

The big guns are at your disposal. They are the weapons of our warfare. They tear down strongholds and put the devil to flight. Will you employ the big guns today?

Love,

Today, I want to make a difference.

WHY DOES IT SEEM SO HARD TO HEAR GOD?

And behold, the LORD was passing by! But the LORD was not in the wind. But the LORD was not in the earthquake. But the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire, the sound of a gentle blowing. 1 Kings 19:11-12

The great prophet, Elijah, was fleeing for his life. Wicked Queen Jezebel had vowed to kill him. Elijah fled to the mountain of God called Mount Horeb (another name for Mount Sinai where Moses received the ten commandments). Elijah was so depressed and fearful that he prayed for death. He desperately needed God to reveal Himself to him and speak to him. And God did, but in a strange way.

God brought a great rushing wind that broke the rocks apart, but God was not in that ear- piercing wind. Then God brought a mighty earthquake that violently shook the mountain, but He was not in that either. Then He brought a blazing, roaring fire. But God was not in any of the BIG, NOISY displays of power. God was in the gentle blowing, in that still small voice.

HOW DOES GOD SPEAK?

Does God shout at His children? Does He speak in thunder clap tones that shake us to the core? He surely can speak loudly like that if He desires, but the truth of the matter is He rarely chooses that method. God's primary way to speak to us is in a soft-toned whisper. Why is that?

Think about it for a moment. If I speak to you in a whisper, you have got to do two things in order to hear me:

1. GET QUIET - God speaks in a whisper so we would get quiet before Him. He wants us to turn off all the outside noise and distracting sounds so that we can give Him our focused and undivided attention. Young Samuel got quiet before the Lord and prayed, "Speak LORD, for your servant is listening" (1 Samuel 3:9). Are YOU listening today?

2. GET CLOSE - God speaks in a whisper so we would draw near to Him. More than anything, that is what God wants from us. He wants us to get close to Him, close to His heart. The Apostle John had such a close relationship with Jesus that he literally laid his head on Jesus' heart at the last supper. When you and I are that close to Jesus, we can hear every whisper that falls from His lips. How close are YOU to Jesus today?

THE CHALLENGE

Will you take time today to get quiet and get close? God wants to reveal Himself to you. He wants to speak to your heart. He invites you into His open arms. The promise is clear, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you" (James 4:8).

The ball is in your court. The King of the universe, the God in whom nothing is impossible, stands ready to lovingly guide, counsel and empower you. What is your answer to Him?

CONSIDER IT ALL... WHAT!?

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. James 1:2-3

Debbie and I get off the plane in Philadelphia on Wednesday night. We are scheduled to lead a three-day marriage conference at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza in King of Prussia, PA. As we gather up the luggage, we have two carry on bags and three checked bags, we venture outside to catch our ride. It takes us about forty-five minutes to get to the hotel. As we unload the bags for hotel check in, I notice something very disturbing: my carry on bag is not in the van. My carry on bag has my laptop, my ipod, my cell phone charger, and ALL MY SPEAKING NOTES FOR THE CONFERENCE!

Panic set in as I thought, what am I going to do!? My friend and I drove back to the airport, hoping and praying that someone found my bag and turned it in to Lost and Found. To my chagrin, Lost and Found had not seen the bag. In so many words, they told me the bag was probably long gone. Nevertheless, I left them my name and Debbie's cell number - my cell phone was almost out of battery power, and I had no way to recharge it.

As I walked through baggage claim one last time, hoping I would see the bag against a wall somewhere, I said, "God, I thank you that my bag is gone. I thank you that it contained my computer AND ALL MY NOTES [I needed to make sure the Lord knew that]. You told me to consider it all joy, and by faith, I choose to do that. Use this for good somehow. Please convict the person who took my bag and have them return it to me. In Jesus' name. Amen."

I went back to the hotel facing an immense amount of work as I would have to recreate a weekend's worth of talks. Whenever I started to get angry or overwhelmed with the situation, I chose to keep thanking God for this trial. We called some friends and asked them to pray for the bag to be returned.

At dinner, Debbie said to me, "Jeff, I am so proud of the way you are handling this. If I had lost all my notes, I would have to be on medication." Within a few moments of that humorous comment, her cell phone rang. It was a strange area code. The lady on the other end of the line asked for Jeff Schreve. Lo and behold, she had my bag! Debbie and I were ecstatic. She was so sorry for accidentally taking it - somehow it got mixed up with their bags - and drove it over to my hotel within the hour.

Tears came to my eyes as I thought how good the Lord is to answer prayer and how faithfully He works when we praise Him and thank Him, regardless of the bleak circumstances.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Are you facing some great trials today? Has an unimagined and unplanned catastrophe struck your life? Do you wonder what to do?

Don't get angry and let the devil use this trial to steal your peace and joy. Make the choice to rejoice and thank God. Consider this a test to help you get stronger in your faith. The worst of situations is the best of times for God to work a powerful miracle. Keep praying and keep praising, it makes all the difference in the world.

THE BLESSING OF ENCOURAGEMENT

But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 3:1

Have you ever played the arcade game Whack-a-Mole? It is a fun little game in which you take a padded mallet in your hand and whack the moles as they pop up from their holes. You have to be observant and "quick on the whack" to do well at that game.

Did you know a lot of us play Whack-a-Mole with our spouse and our children? We notice every wrong thing that pops up in them, and we quickly whack them for it. We are so adept at seeing the negative. We are so good at beating down those we supposedly love. The sad truth about playing Whack-a-Mole is this: eventually those we love stop popping up; they just give up. Their attitude is understandable as they quietly whisper, "What's the use of trying anymore. It is obvious that there is nothing I can do to please my dad (or my mom or my spouse)."

PUT AWAY THE MALLET

If you have been guilty of playing Whack-a-Mole, the time is now to put away the mallet. Take time TODAY to let your spouse, your children, your loved ones know that you are proud of them. Be observant of what those special people in your life do well and praise them for it. People respond to positive encouragement much better than they do constant correction and criticism. Isn't that true of you? I know it is of me.

What if Jesus played Whack-a-Mole with us? How could we ever make it? We would be beaten into total despair. But Jesus doesn't deal with us that way. He gently and patiently works with us, convicting of us sin while encouraging us with His love and grace. When you fall and fail, He is quick to reach out His hand of forgiveness to pull you out of the ditch of discouragement and get you back on the narrow road with Him. In Psalm 130:3-4, the Psalmist said, "If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared." Aren't you glad of that?

REAL ENCOURAGEMENT FOR REAL LIFE

If you are prone to beat yourself up over faults and failures, if you are prone to discouragement because of the negatives you see in your own life, let me recommend my new book, REAL ENCOURAGEMENT FOR REAL LIFE. I believe this book will be a great help in your relationship with God so you can truly walk by faith and not by sight. Click here for more details.

I hope you have a great Thanksgiving. May God bless you and yours as you look to Him.

A HOMERUN CHRISTMAS GIFT

I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.

3 John 1:4

The Christmas season is here! It is time to pull out the shopping list and find the perfect gifts for those special people in your life.

I remember one of the best Christmas days we ever had as a family. My wife, Debbie, loves gifts. It is one of her love languages. I don't speak that language too well, so communication on that end has not been stellar over the years. But this one Christmas several years ago, I jacked it out of the park.

When Debbie's mom died, Debbie was given all her jewelry. Debbie's mom had redone her wedding ring some years earlier, taken the diamonds out of her original set and placed in another ring. Debbie never liked the new arrangement. She had mentioned a time or two about her desire to restore the original wedding set. So, as a surprise to Debbie, I had the original wedding ring redone. It looked GORGEOUS and had so much sentimental value to her. When she opened the box and saw that ring, she began crying big tears of joy. (Then I started crying, and the girls started crying, but they were good tears.) It was the perfect gift for Debbie. I was so thrilled that I blessed her heart with something so special.

THE PERFECT GIFT FOR JESUS

Wouldn't it be awesome to give Jesus a gift this Christmas that would bring great joy to His heart? Did you know that special gift is out there? It is within reach of every single one of us.

John said, "I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth" (3 John 1:4). The thing that rejoices the great heart of God is not diamonds or gold (remember that He paves the streets of heaven with gold), but simple obedience to Him. Jesus said, "He who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me" (John 14:21). Walking in the truth shows God you really love Him, and that brings Him great joy!

I believe the key to walking in the truth is to walk honestly and humbly before the Lord. God is not looking for sinless perfection from you or me. That is a good thing, since you and I cannot live a life of sinless perfection. What God is looking for is openness and honesty before Him. When we mess up, He wants us to fess up. God hates it when we cover up. He cannot work in a heart that is full of cover up. Proverbs 28:13 tells us, "He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion."

This Christmas season make it your goal to give to God what He really wants - to see you walking in the truth. Take Him at His Word and start doing what He says. It is a home run gift for God this Christmas and every day following.

Love,

Today, I want to make a difference.

DOES GOD HAVE FAVORITES?

The LORD favors those who fear Him, those who wait for His lovingkindness.
Psalm 147:11

When I was in school, I always tried to finagle my way into the good graces of the teacher. My thinking was this: A teacher who knows you and likes you is always more apt to give you the benefit of the doubt when it comes to your grade.

In college, I made it a point to develop a relationship with my Calculus Teaching Assistant, Urjit Yanik. (As you may have guessed, Urjit was not from East Texas.) I frequently visited him during office hours to ask him calculus questions and go over homework problems. He knew I was trying hard to grasp all the concepts, equations and formulas. I was one of the few students who took the time to seek his help.

When it came time for the calculus final - a ten question, multiple choice test with every lengthy calculus problem having "none of the above" as a possible answer, UGH! - I cashed in my chips with Urjit. I was up every few minutes asking him questions and getting his reaction on my line of thinking. At one point, he actually came to my seat to let me know, in a roundabout way, that I may want to rethink problem #8 because the answer I had penciled in was not correct.

I ended up getting an "A" in Calculus because I studied hard AND built a relationship with Urjit that made him want to go out of his way to help me succeed. I think it would be safe to say that Urjit showed me favor. I respectfully sought his help throughout the semester, and he graciously helped me, even during the final exam.

DOES GOD DO THAT?

As the verse in Psalm 147:11 clearly states, "The LORD favors those who fear Him." God smiles upon those who continually show up at His doorstep during "office hours." He loves it when we come to Him with our questions and our problems. When He sees that we are serious about knowing Him, honoring Him and doing His will, He pours out His favor upon us. He becomes to us "our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1).

And you know what else? When you really seek God and stand in awe of Him with all your heart, He shares His secrets with you. It's true! "The secret of the LORD is for those who fear Him, and He will make them know His covenant" (Psalm 25:14). "Surely the Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secret counsel to His servants the prophets" (Amos 3:7).

THE BIG QUESTION?

Will you take advantage of the Lord's invitation to come to Him? Will you go to His office hours for individual tutoring? Or will you do like the vast multitudes that show up at church (like showing up at class), but never bother to take the time to really and truly develop a close, personal relationship with the Teacher?

God wants to pour out His favor on you. He wants to share His secrets with you. Office hours start now. Are you coming?
