AND I KNOW HE WATCHES ME

"I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you."  Psalm 32:8

"For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the LORD, and He watches all his paths."  Proverbs 5:21

Last Sunday, I was privileged to speak at my pastor friend's church in Houston.  After the service, Debbie was helping people at our book table.  As always, she was very kind, gracious, and welcoming to all who came by for a signed book.

Unbeknownst to Debbie, there was a lady present who was watching her.  She wanted to see how Debbie interacted with the people.  Was she kind to everyone?  Was she helpful to all?  Was she still pleasant and joyful even when seemingly no one was around?  Was she real and genuine ... or was she just performing for the crowd?  (I am happy to report that Debbie passed the "watch" test with flying colors.)

NO ONE IS WATCHING?

Isn't it amazing how different we are prone to act when we think no one is watching?  The tendency to whine, to gripe, to complain, to snap at our spouse and kids, to shirk responsibility, and to get in the flesh is much greater in settings of perceived seclusion and anonymity, isn't it?  If you know you are being watched, you are on your best behavior.

Well, here is the truth: You are always being watched by the Lord.  And that has both good and bad ramifications.

1.  "Amen! He loves me so much that he doesn't take His eyes off me!"  I mean, how cool is that!?  When I was a kid, I loved to have my mom and dad watch me when I rode my bike, shot the basketball, or jumped off the diving board.  I loved for them to be proud of me.  Well, God is proud of His children!  He watches us always because He doesn't want to miss anything His sons and daughters do.  He wants to be there with us every step of the way.  His eye is always upon us to guide us and show us the way we are to walk.

2.  "Oh, me!  He sees all my acts of rebellion and disobedience."  It is one thing to sin in secret, but to sin openly before the Lord is another matter.  Newsflash: Nothing is done in secret.  "The eyes of the LORD are in every place, watching the evil and the good" (Proverbs 15:3).  He knows your sinful thoughts and sees every sinful deed.  Remember that the next time you are tempted to cheat, to lie, to lust, or to do something you know is dishonoring to the Lord.  He is with you, and He is watching you.

SOMETHING TO PONDER

How differently would you live your life if you lived 24/7 with Jesus?  Well, you do.  Jesus lives in every Christian through His Spirit.  He goes everywhere you go and sees everything you see.  So, make it your practice to live in conscience of His presence and committed to His glory.

Love,

Pastor Jeff Schreve

HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED?

On September, 4, 2006, the world lost a very special person – Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter.  He died in a freak accident with a stingray.  I was saddened to hear the news that Steve was gone.  He was such a likeable guy with a zest for life and a humble, unassuming fearlessness that drew people to him like a magnet.

One time in an interview, Steve Irwin was asked how he would like the world to remember him.  His answer was classic.  Irwin said, "I want the world to remember me for two things: passion and enthusiasm."  That is how I will always remember him, a guy full of passion and enthusiasm... along with a touch of insanity as he wrestled crocs and handled poisonous snakes ... CRIKEY!

NO SUBSTITUTE

Passion and enthusiasm ought to be the mettle of every true Christian.  We should be so extremely passionate and enthusiastic about Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross that, like Steve Irwin, we leave no doubt as to what we are excited about in life.

Interestingly, the word "enthusiasm" has God in the middle of it (Theos).  Enthusiasm is literally "enGODiasm."  When you really understand that God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life, how can you not get excited?  How can you not overflow with enthusiasm?

When George Foreman was making his boxing comeback some years ago, he told one interviewer that he was approaching his comeback career like a fire truck, not a water truck.  When asked to explain, Foreman responded, "On the road, no one notices an Ozarka water truck, but they surely notice a red fire truck speeding to its destination with the siren blaring.  That gets people's attention.  That is what I am going to be in my comeback, a fire truck."

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Wouldn't you LOVE to be known as a "fire truck" for Jesus Christ... as someone passionately in love with, on fire and FULL of excitement for the Lord?  Is it possible?  Yes!  Even for someone who is not very outgoing?  Yes!!

Fill your mind and heart each day with His great mercy and love for you.  Remember, "We love because He FIRST loved us" (1 John 4:19).  The way to kindle a white hot passion and overflowing excitement for Jesus is "to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God" (Eph. 3:18-19).

Listen, if Steve Irwin could get all excited about a crocodile, and George Foreman could get all excited about a boxing comeback, how much more can you and I get all excited about the King of kings and Lord of lords who loves us, died and rose again for us, has all authority and power in every situation in our lives, is working all things together for our good, will never leave us or forsake us, and is coming again to take us home to glory!!  No wonder the Bible tells us to "Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth" (Psalm 100:1).  We definitely have MUCH to shout about!!  Why not start today?

THE DISCIPLE WHOM JESUS LOVED?

"There was reclining on Jesus' breast one of His disciples whom Jesus loved."  John 13:23

"The disciple whom Jesus loved."  That is the way John refers to himself in the Gospel of John.  He never calls himself by name, just "the disciple whom Jesus loved."  When I first read that, I remember saying to myself, "Come on, John.  Have a little humility!  Who do you think you are, God's gift to the 12?"  His self-imposed moniker just seemed to smack of arrogance and pride.  But then it hit me like a truck.

John wasn't boasting. He was bowing down in gratitude and awe.  He was saying in effect, "Can you believe it?  Jesus loves me ... an unworthy sinner like me!"  Whoa.  That changes everything.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF?

How you see yourself is critical to your walk with the Lord.  Many see themselves in a very negative light.  They believe lies when it comes to their relationship with the Lord and His view of them.

1.  I am "the disciple whom Jesus tolerates."

2.  I am "the disciple whom Jesus is sorely disappointed in."

3.  I am "the disciple whom Jesus is greatly displeased with."

4.  I am "the disciple whom Jesus loathes."

If you think any of those thoughts, you are "the disciple whom Jesus wants to change."

START SPEAKING THE TRUTH

Maybe you are like the millions of Christians who struggle with really believing, accepting, and enjoying the love of God for them.  Maybe you have no problem believing God loves others, but you have terrible trouble believing God could love you, knowing all the bad things you have done ... even since you have become a Christian.

Here is the great news that is 100% true: Jesus loves you!  He loves you so much that He willingly died for you on the cross.  You matter to Him.  If you are a born-again follower of Jesus Christ, you are - dare I say it - "the disciple whom Jesus loves."

Will you let this truth penetrate your heart?

When I was in college, I heard an old hymn that spoke to me in a powerful way.  The hymn is called Jesus Loves Even Me.  It still speaks to me today.

I am so glad that our Father in Heav'n
Tells of His love in the Book He has giv'n;
Wonderful things in the Bible I see,
This is the dearest, that Jesus loves me.

I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me;
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves even me.

Listen, you and I may not feel worthy of His love (because we aren't), but He loves us anyway.  The cross proves it.  Start seeing yourself the way John saw himself - as "the disciple whom Jesus loves."  If you do, it will change your life!

WHEN MAKING DECISIONS

"Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the valley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom."  Genesis 13:12

Decisions.  We all make them every day.  From what to have for lunch to possibly moving to a new city and taking a new job, we are confronted with decision making on a regular basis.  So ... how well do you do when making decisions?  Do you know how to make them God's way?

Decision making always reminds me of Lot, Abraham's nephew.  Lot is a great example of how not to make a decision.  He was a guy who thought he could have his cake and eat it too.  He was given the choice regarding where to live, and he made the decision to pitch his tents toward Sodom.

At the time, it didn't seem like that big or bad of a decision.  Financially, it made good sense.  His flocks and herds would get full and fat on all the lush green grass in the area around Sodom.  The spiritual side of the decision was another story, however.  And that side proved monumentally devastating.  Moving toward Sodom was a decision that wrecked and ruined his life, his wife, and his family.  Sodom and Gomorrah were such wicked cities that the fire of God eventually fell and consumed them in everlasting judgment (see Genesis 19).

DECISION MAKING 101

Let's consider Lot's decision for a moment and see how that speaks to you and me today.  There are three important questions that we all need to ask ourselves before we decide anything of any significance.

1.  Where will this decision lead?  What is the potential end result?  An unequally yoked marriage? An unwanted pregnancy?  A sexually transmitted disease?  A drug/alcohol addiction?  For Lot, moving toward Sodom was a major step in the wrong direction.  Getting close to Sodom was akin to a recovering alcoholic keeping a fifth of Jack Daniels in his pantry.  Not a good move if you want to stay sober.

2.  Will this decision help me grow and glorify God?  Lot's new friends were Sodomites, people whom the Bible described as "exceedingly wicked and sinners against the LORD."  As you look at the friends you have chosen for yourself, are these people picking you up, or are they pulling you down?  As a pastor, I have seen good, godly people derail and crash spiritually.  Oftentimes the reason is they choose friends who are a bad influence on them.  The Bible says, "He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm" (Prov. 13:20).  Listen, if you are serious about your relationship with God, your inner circle of friends needs to be those who walk in the light with the Lord.

3.  What does this decision say about my heart and character?  What did Lot's choice to move toward Sodom say about him.?  Although he was a believer, his heart was not right toward God.  He was focused on sin and self, gold and greed.  He wasn't seeking first the Kingdom of God, and it became obvious as his life unfolded.  Let me encourage you to pray with me, "Change my heart, O God.  I am so prone to wander.  Help me Lord to love You and Your will and ways above all."

May God remind us of these questions as we make decisions in life ... because decisions determine destiny.  If you don't believe me, just ask Lot.

BURNING THE WICK OR BURNING THE OIL?

"'Not by might or by power, but by My Spirit,' says the LORD of Hosts."  Zechariah 4:6

I heard something the other day from a very well-known and respected pastor.  He talked about ministry being "so incredibly hard."  He was doing great work for God, reaching lots of people for Christ, but he was SO WORN OUT in the process.  Can you relate?  Does it seem as if the things God calls you to do are SO INCREDIBLY HARD?

As I thought about that statement, I started to wonder if this pastor was unknowingly burning the wick instead of the oil.

Everyone knows when you light a candle, the wax candle begins to melt and consume itself as it burns.  An oil powered lamp, however, does not consume itself.  It can burn and burn and burn with no ill-effects.  It can shine as long as there is oil in the lamp.

THE HOLY SPIRIT

Isn't it interesting that one of the key symbols in the Bible for the Holy Spirit is oil.  Anointing was done with oil to symbolize the Spirit of God coming upon a person - "Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him [David] in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward" (1 Sam. 16:13).

God saved us to walk in the infinite power of the Holy Spirit, not in the puny power of our own human strength.  Jesus said, "Come to Me all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy, and My load is light" (Matt. 11:28-30).  When you feel worn out ... when you feel as if this Christian life is just SO INCREDIBLY HARD ... you are doing it in your own strength, and you need to come to Jesus.

Quit burning the wick and start burning the oil.  Of course we will still get tired, but the work will NEVER feel like a heavy, exhausting chore.  It will be exhilarating ... and you will feel the power from on high when the Holy Spirit is filling your life and providing the energy.

A SIMPLE PRAYER

Maybe you are heavy-laden today.  Maybe you need to pray this simple prayer:

Lord, I am so worn out trying so hard to please You and do Your will.  It is obvious to me that I am burning the wick ... and I need to start burning the oil.  Jesus, you have invited me to come to You.  You want to give me rest.  You want to live through me, not just live in me.  Right now, Jesus, I surrender my will to Your will.  Fill me with Your Spirit and Your power.  I yield control of every area of my life to You.  In Jesus' name.

That prayer, prayed from a humble, believing heart makes all the difference in the world!  Remember, anytime you feel burdened, weighed down, and overwhelmed in your Christian life, you need to blow out the candle and light the lamp!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR ANGER?

"'For the churning of milk produces butter, and pressing the nose brings forth blood; so the churning of anger produces strife."  Proverbs 30:33

College football is just around the corner and any team knows about rivalry games.  There are just some special match-ups where the stakes are higher and the emotions run hotter.  That is especially true concerning the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners.  Texas-OU weekend in Dallas in October often sees fan fights as the animosity toward one another runs as deep as the Red River.

Obviously, these "fighting fans" let their anger run amok.  They churn their anger, work themselves into a frenzy, and, no doubt, regret the strife that invariably ensues.  Anger is like that.  If you churn it and turn it over and over in your mind and heart, you will see harmful, hurtful results.  Many have been murdered because of churned anger.  If you don't believe me, just ask Cain and Abel.

SO WHAT DO WE DO WITH ANGER?

God never wants us to churn and chew on our anger.  To churn and chew on anger is as foolish as rolling around in Poison Ivy.  Surely no one would do that, right?

Perhaps you are angry toward a boss who mistreated you, or a spouse who betrayed you, or a relative who abused you, or a dad who wasn't there for you, or a coach who cut you, or a teacher who embarrassed you, or a former friend who stabbed you in the back. When that person's name is mentioned in conversation, you can feel your stomach start to churn and begin to taste the bitterness in your mouth toward that terrible, horrible, hypocritical person. Inflicting harm on that "evil" person sure sounds like a great plan, doesn't it?  Surely God would want you to take the bull by the horns and get even, right?  WRONG!

"Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,' says the Lord" (Romans12:19).

GIVE YOUR ANGER TO GOD!

Anger typically comes about because something happened to you or someone you love that you did not like, did not want, or did not think was right.  Yet, God in His providence allowed it to touch your life.  Therefore, when you feel anger welling up inside of you, instead of churning it, chewing on it, and letting it produce strife, give it to God.  You can choose His grace to help you in your time of need.  His grace, the desire and power to live for Christ and rise above, is sufficient for every situation you and I will ever encounter.

Are you angry today?  Are you churning your angry?  Is the rancid butter of strife, discord, resentment and disharmony starting to ooze out of your life like pus from a boil?  (I was extra graphic here on purpose to help see what God sees when you churn your anger.)  Put down the churning-stick, and give your anger to God.  Let Him repay those who have wronged you.  Choose His grace, and allow the Lord to take the ashes of your hurt and anger and turn them to gold.

PRAYER

Dear Father, I have been holding on to anger, churning it, and chewing on it ... and I need to stop.  I confess what I have been doing is a sin, and it is very displeasing to You.  Forgive me, Lord.  By faith, I put down the churn-stick and turn this situation over to You.  I choose Your grace to help me rise above.  Bring back the joy, Lord, as I walk in the light with You.  In Jesus' name.  Amen!

HOW'S YOUR REPUTATION?

"'But select from among you, brethren, seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task."  Acts 6:3

Reputation - Quality or character as seen or judged by people in general (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary).

When I was in high school, there were certain students who had a bad reputation.  They were known in school for drugs, or loose morals, or making trouble.  Most of the time, those with a bad reputation had earned it.  They had done bad things that sullied their character and brought disrespect upon their name.  Tragically, they found out the hard way that once their reputation was trashed, it was very difficult to restore it.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

How about you?  What kind of a reputation do you have in your school, your workplace, your church and your community?  How do people view your character?  Would your friends, neighbors, customers, classmates and workmates describe you as a person of honesty, integrity and moral fortitude?  Do you conduct your life, your language, your business practices, your family, your finances and your decision-making in a manner that honors the Lord and reflects His holiness?

Or, do you cut corners when you think no one is looking?  Do you cheat here and there on your taxes or expense reports or school assignments?  Do you tell "little white lies" when it seems more convenient?  Do your morals take a big dip when temptation comes and the coast seems clear of outside observation?  Are you rude, demanding, and stingy when it comes to waiters, waitresses, and others who are serving you?

Reputation is very important to God.  He wants His children to be known for love, grace, and godliness.  Just like any good parent, it grieves His heart if His kids are known more for pettiness, bitterness, immorality, stinginess and rudeness.  And sadly, that describes lots of people who call themselves Christians.

Maybe your reputation has been trashed due to poor choices from your past.  Is there any hope?  YES!  God is in the life-changing business and the reputation-changing business.  If you will yield your life to Christ and start living for Jesus 24/7, the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him will begin to fill your life just like that of fresh bread filling a bakery.  People will notice a brand new you ... and God will be greatly glorified.

HOW THE DOWN CAN GET OUT

"Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise.  Give thanks to Him; bless His name.  For the LORD is good; His loving kindness is everlasting, and His faithfulness
to all generations."  Psalm 100:4-5

Down and out.  Feeling the blues.  Lonely.  Depressed.  Discouraged.  Disillusioned.  A case of the blahs.

What do you do if these words seem to characterize your life right now?  How can you get out of the dark pit you are in when you feel down and defeated?

God has the answer in His word, and it is a sure fire way to change your outlook on life.  What is this silver bullet of an answer?  Well, it is very simple, but very profound.  The answer is ... thanksgiving and praise.  There is great power in a thankful, praising heart.

DISCOURAGED PEOPLE

I have found that when people get down and discouraged, thanksgiving and praise tend to be the last things on their list.  To the natural mind, it seems ludicrous to thank and praise God when everything is going wrong.  But the truth is, God inhabits the praises of His people (Ps. 22:3), and the giving of thanks, regardless of the adverse circumstances, is a great declaration of faith.  And faith pleases God!

You see, thanksgiving and praise say to God, "Father, I know You are the King and in complete control of all things.  I know You are good and merciful.  I know that You love me.  So as an act of faith, I thank You and praise You, even in this great trial that I am experiencing,  for I believe You are going to work all of this together for my good, just like You promised."

TRY IT AND SEE

I encourage you to take the challenge and put God's Word into practice in your life.  Every morning, noon, and night, "enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise."  As you do, you will experience a change within, a significant attitude adjustment regarding your circumstances.  For God will help you get your eyes off your pitiful situation and onto your powerful Savior who can move mountains and part seas.  There is nothing too difficult for Him.  So praise Him, thank Him, and bless His name.  You'll be so glad that you did!

ARE YOU KNOWN IN HELL?

"But also some of the Jewish exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to name over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus saying, 'I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.'  And seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.  And the evil spirit answered and said to them, 'I recognize Jesus, and know about Paul, but who are you?'"  Acts 19:13-15

When I was a kid growing up in the little town of Los Altos, CA, I remember going to the United States Post Office with my mom.  Post Offices were well-known for one interesting thing: They had a bulletin board of the FBI's Most Wanted.  Customers of the Post Office were alerted to these enemies of the stateas their mug shots were plastered all over the country.  If you had seen one of these enemies, you were to notify the authorities immediately, for these people were considered armed and dangerous.

THE DEVIL'S BULLETIN BOARD

Did you know that there is a bulletin board in hell's Post Office?  The devil mounts pictures of those he consideres enemies to the kingdom of darkness.  These folks are guilty of being radiant Christians, empowered by the Holy Spirit and armed with the word of God.  They are people like Paul, known in heaven ... and feared in hell.

Let me ask you a sobering, thought-provoking question.  Is your picture on the devil's bulletin board?  Are you known in heaven and feared in hell?  Or do you just have a secondhand faith?

A SECONDHAND FAITH DOESN'T WORK

Acts 19 tells us about a man named Sceva and his seven sons.  They were Jewish exorcists who didn't know the Lord but wanted to use the power of His name.  They thought the name of Jesus to a demon was like kryptonite to Superman.  What they didn't realize, however, was the power over demons came from actually knowing Jesus, not just knowing about Him.  They tried to piggyback on Paul's faith in Christ, and it did not work well at all.

The demon replied to these Jewish exorcists and basically said, "Who are you to order me?  You are not on our bulletin board.  You are not armed and dangerous."  The Bible says, "And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded" (Acts 19:16).

A secondhand faith will never experience the power of God.  Jesus is not a lucky rabbit's foot.  He is the King of glory, the Savior of the world.  He wants to have a genuine relationship with you.  He wants to fill your life with His love and grace.  He wants to live through you and make you a force for His kingdom, salt and light in a lost and dying world.

If you have never done so, you can join the Lord's army today and become armed and dangerous for the King.  If you have gone AWOL, you can get back on track with Him, for He is the God of second chances (see Jonah 3:1).

One of the Lord's favorite words is come.  Will you take Him up on His invitation and come to Him?

And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come." And let the one who hears say, "Come." And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.  (Rev. 22:17).

How FAT Are You?

"The wise of heart will receive commands, but a babbling fool will be thrown down."  Proverbs 10:8

When I was a senior in high school, I was lean and athletic, tipping the scales at 165 – 170 pounds.  No doubt, my frame could carry more weight, and I needed to "fill out" a little more and lose that schoolboy physique.  So when I got to college and began dining on the All-You-Can-Eat Dobie Cafeteria Meal Plan at UT, I began to fill out.  My weight jumped to 175-180.  After I got married and we started having kids, I filled out even more.  Today, I am hovering around 200, with no more room to "fill out."  I'd like for the lean, fit, 185 pound Jeff Schreve to come back soon!  That guy could eat like a horse and still stay at 10% body fat.

All of us know that getting physically fat is not wanted or healthy.  In the spiritual realm, however, FAT is the way to be!  The Lord wants His followers to be FAT.  So, how FAT are you?

F is for Faithful.  When you are faithful, you are trustworthy and dependable.  You are a person others can count on.  You are one who is true to his word and follows through on his commitments.  Additionally, as the word clearly communicates, being faithful means you are full of faith (just as beautiful means full of beauty and wonderful means full of wonder).  A faithful person believes God and steps out on His Word, walking "by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor. 5:7).

A is for Available.  When you are available, you are not filling your plate with your agenda, leaving little time for the things of God.  An available person has one agenda, and that is God's agenda.  This person understands that he is a servant of the King.  And the servant truly has one and only one job: to do the will of the master.  Philip was one who was available to the Lord.  He was leading a big revival in Samaria, but when an angel of the Lord told him to arise and go to a desert road leading to Gaza, he immediately arose and went (see Acts 8:25-40).  Philip was a "Yes, Lord" person.  Are you?

T is for Teachable.  When you are teachable, you are very open to correction.  You receive commands, corrections, and even rebukes with "an honest and good heart" (Lk. 8:15) that wants to learn, grow, and be healthy.  You are not defensive and prideful, trying hard to justify your actions and win arguments.  You are willing to have blind spots pointed out by trusted friends who love you and want God's best for you.  It takes humility to be teachable.  And when you are humble, God pours out His grace.

As you look over this acrostic, step on the spiritual scales and see how FAT you are.  Ask God to help you in the area(s) where you may be falling short.  Pray the prayer of David, "Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way" (Ps. 139:23-24).

The Lord works the greatest and the best in a heart that is faithful, available, and teachable.
