Joseph Sevier Hickey, 81, retired school superintendent, died Friday, April 3, 2009. Visitation with the family, 4:00-5:30 P.M., Tuesday, April 7, 2009; service, 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, April 8, 2009, both at Downing & Lahey Mortuary West Chapel in Wichita, Kansas.  Burial will follow the service at 2:00 P.M., Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt, KS.

Joe was in education for forty-one years, eight as a teacher and thirty-three as a superintendent. Eighteen of those years were in the Maize School District where he retired in 1996.

Preceded in death by parents, Margaret and Sevier Hickey; first wife, Peggy Rose; sisters, Marie Vickers, Myrtle Martin and Cleo Hannigan; sons, William Sevier Hickey, Joseph Nelson Hickey and Michael Patrick Hickey; grandson, Gus Rau Meyer, Jr.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Beverly; brother, Jim Hickey (Bobbie); sister, Faye Boal (George); son, Jim Hickey; daughters, Susan Lindahl (Paul) and Cheryl Meyer (Gus); grandchildren, Nels Lindahl (Joni Jorgensen), Jenifer Lindahl (Matt Boles), Jason Meyer and Ben Hickey. He leaves other close family members including Beverly's children, Kevin Nordquist, Andrea Mitchell, and their children, Kaeman, Karena Mitchell and Nicona, Jessica (Derek Gould and son, Aidan), Talon, Rachael, Rebecca, Kordell, Josey Nordquist and numerous friends who will miss him dearly.

Joe was a coach in Severy during the late 1950's and into the 1960's.  He was class sponsor for the class of 1958.  He later was with the Skyline School District west of Pratt for several years.  When we lived at Pratt, we used to visit with him and his family, when he would come to visit his mother and sister.  His sister, Marie, was postmaster at Pratt at that time and his family had the Red Rock Cafe on highway 54 close to the hospital.

Coach Hickey gave me a chance to play basketball when I was going to high school in Severy, I think he was very good mentor and coach. His second wife was raised in Severy.
