Betty Lucine Gibson, 85, of Ponca City, Oklahoma and formerly of Arkansas City, Kansas, died February 14, 2009 at her residence. She was born October 29, 1923 in Longton, Kansas to George and Grace Ellis  She grew up in Longton where she graduated from high school in 1941.  From there she went to nursing school at the Bloomington Hospital Training School for Nurses in Bloomington, Indiana, graduating in 1944. 

After graduation, she met Woodrow "Woody" Gibson.  They married on January 29, 1949 in Wichita, Kansas.  The couple made their home in Arkansas City where Betty worked as a nurse at what was known then as the Arkansas City Memorial Hospital.  She soon became the director of nurses.  After 32 years of working as DON, she decided she was ready for a change of pace and retired from the hospital in 11977.  She then began working for Dr. Bruce Smith and helping an insurance company with health physicals.

Mr and Mrs. Gibson were active members of Central Christian Church.  She was also involved in the local Soroptomist Club, Business and Professional Women's Club, the American Red Cross, the American Nurses Association, and the Literacy Council in Arkansas City.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Gibson.  Survivors include her son, Val Gibson of Arlington, Texas; a daughter, Valoyce Musgrove of Ponca City, Oklahoma; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Vera Reba Wallace of Arkansas City, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at the Central Christian Church in Arkansas City, Kansas.  The Rev Steve Chambers and Rev. Lawrence Leatherman will officiate.  Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.  Friends may greet the family from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday, February 17, 1009 at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and Hospice of North Central Oklahoma.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.  Online condolences may be made at www.rindt-erdman.com.
