Joan "Darlene" (Brown) Chitwood, 55, of Independence, Kansas passed away Sunday, October 12, 2008, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.  Darlene was born January 11, 1953 in Dalton, Georgia to Rev. Roy and Malvia (Suggs) Brown.  She graduated from North Elk High School in Howard in 1971 and earned an Associate's Degree at Independence College. 

She married Freeman Chitwood on February 27, 1988 in Independence Kansas, and he survives, of the home.  Mrs. Chitwood was a substitute teacher for first and second grades in Independence.  Other survivors include two sons, Ron and Mike Chitwood, both of Sweet Springs, Missouri; a daughter, Joanie Bowlan of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; two brothers, Nathan Brown of Neosho Falls, Kansas and Lyle Brown, of Wichita, Kansas; and two grandchildren.

Services were held on Friday, October 17, 2008 at Potts Chapel of Independence with Rev. Steve Butler officiating.  Burial was at Mount Hope Cemetery.  The family has suggested memorials in her name be left with Potts Funeral Chapel, 122 S. Penn, P.O. Box 801, Independence, Kansas  67301.

Joan's Father, the Rev Roy Brown served on the same ship with my brother Wes, in WWII, they remained good friends throughout life. Roy Brown was a really neat person. Our condolences to the Chitwood family.
