Hair Bands From China Made From Recycled Condoms- Reported to be Truth!

Summary of the eRumor:
Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China threatening to spread sexually-transmitted diseases and bacteria.

The Truth:
We have chosen to class this alarming story as "Reported to be Truth!" because it seems to have only one source.  We have not found any additional substantiation.

The article circulated in the eRumor from AFP attributes the story to China Daily newspaper.

China Daily quotes Guangzhou-based New Express Daily.

So all of the reports are boiling down to the same news source, but we would feel better about the claims if we had other evidence to support it.

The article claims that the used condoms may be spreading the very diseases they were designed to prevent.

The forwarded email is alarming to those who receive it, but the New Express Daily article said that the condom-laced hair bands have been sold only in China in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province.

The article included pictures of some of the hair bands and what appeared to be pieces of condoms inside.  Whether the condoms were actually used ones or not has not been confirmed, but the New Express Daily claims that they are.

The article also warns that the condoms could retain traces of sexually transmitted diseases including AIDS, but experts say that is not the way the HIV virus is transmitted, so the threat of AIDS may have been exaggerated.

If the stuff was heated it would be OK, but yuk! How disgusting is that!!! :P :P :P I hope none of that has come here.

Normally, I can think of a good retort.

But this time I'm speechless.

Then again, I don't buy too many hair bands. And, I'm too old for the other.
It truly is "a wonderful life."

OK... really?  This is just odd.  I can't imagine they'd use USED condoms... you think there's a used condom drop-box sitting next to the recycle newspaper bin?

Tobina, in China they recycle everything, they waste nothing. Americans have no concept of what life in china is like. we have always been the Nation of plenty and also a wasteful Nation. I am not surprised at all in the chinese recycling these. I think you would be totally shocked if you knew all that the Chinese do to survive. They would have been better off if the condom had been invented 200 years sooner. I worked in India on 2 different occascions and it is just as bad or worse. I asked one of the educated Indians that worked for me why the Goverment didn't furnish birth control, he said they had tried the pill and the women either wouldn't take them or they would take all of them at once.

A surprising amount of our mixed "trash" goes to China. It's picked apart and every little thing that can be is reused in some way. I can't imagine food with cardboard ground up in it, but they do it. That's how the melamine is getting into food. They try to extend everything to make it go further. Pretty scary!
