ROTFL uhmmm I have no idea what kind i had.  I use straw, hay, whatever.  Uhmm i think the last hay i used was fescue mix.
YOu basically use a cage or something to hold it all together. I used fieldfence made into a cage about 3'-4' in diameter.  Put about 10 sets of potatos in it and start piling on hay.  when it got to the top it was putting on tubors and i left it alone til harvest.

I can't wait til next year. I am working on getting some of these old hay bales that are no good for feed.  If i can get a few i'm going to roll them out on top of my garden and let them compost over the winter. By spring, i'll till em up and have a wonderful garden!

Prarie hay is great for mulch, it not only enriches the soil, but conserves moisture and is an attractive color IMO.

uhmm i don't want mulch. I want compost. :D  It needs to rot down into soil :)

I have a bunch out here in the goatie area.  Gotta get these ragweed trees cut down so i can get to it though :P
