From the Longton Weekly Ledger, January 17, 1874,

"Howard County will be represented in the State Legislature this year by the Hon. James N. Young."

Young was from Paw Paw Township and was elected on a county division platform. According to Thomas E. Thompson, Young could not spare any horses from his farm and walked the 130-mile distance to Topeka.
