From the South Kansas Tribune (Independence), February 7, 1872,

"Near Jordan Village, in Owen county, Ind., lives a man by the name of Hiram Worley, whose first wife is still living, who has twenty seven children—twenty-five boys and two girls, and all twins but one! The children are all still single, and all live at home with their parents."

How did these people ever get anything done? They had to be spending all their time making or taking care of their children.

Don't know how true this store is but I did a search and found the same story appeared in the Kokomo (Indiana) Tribune, January 30, 1872.
"If one of the many corrupt...county-seat contests must be taken by way of illustration, the choice of Howard County, Kansas, is ideal." Dr. Everett Dick, The Sod-House Frontier, 1854-1890.
"One of the most expensive county-seat wars in terms of time and money lost..." Dr. Homer E Socolofsky, KSU

in 1872 the older children were doing their part in helping with the work and also helping take care of the younger ones, I bet.  What I want to know,  ::) OMG but here goes, when did the parents have time to WORK?
MY GOAL IS TO LIVE FOREVER. SO FAR, SO GOOD !
