Eugene "Gene" Murray, age 84, formerly of Wichita, passed away Monday, oct. 15, 2007 at Medicalodge of Eureka in Eureka, Kansas.

Gene was born Jan. 30, 1923 in Harper, Kan., the son of Ross Irving and Sarah Elnora (Brown) Murray.

Gene was a graduate of Harper High School, class of 1941.  After graduation, gene enrolled at the University of Kansas.  Gene put his college career on hold at the end of 1942 to enlist in the Army Air Corp during WWII.  After the war Gene enrolled in Wichita State University and received a bachelor's degree in business.

In 1949, Gene accepted a position with the Internal Revenue Service in Wichita.  He held various positions with the IRS such as tax auditor, pension/trust consultant, and as an instructor to new employees at the various regional offices of the IRS.  After thirty years of service, Gene retired in 1978.

Gene met the love of his life, Peggy Elanor Graves, at a Saturday night dance in his hometown.  Gene and Peggy were married on June 27, 1948 in Anthony, Kan.  They made their home in Wichita.

Gene was a member of the University United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed square dancing, working on cars, gardening, and woodworking.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife Peggy, his parents, one brother Graydon Murray, and one sister Audrey Murray.  He is survived by his daughter Roslyn Stewart and husband Paul of Howard, two granddfaughters Kristen Bunch and husband Michael of Kansas City, Mo., and Kelly Stewart of Pittsburg, Kansas and one sister Dorothy Hawk of Wichita.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, oct. 23, 2007 at the Antioch Christian Church in Wichita with Pastors John King and Robin Haines officiating.  Private family interment was held at the Resthaven Cemetery.
