Does anyone remember Pat & Bob's on the highway (400 now) east & north of Severy?  Who owned it?

Pat and Bob Spaunagle owned it. Bob was the son of Peggy that was the Howard schools janitor for years.

Yes, I remember it well.  I worked there after school, weekends and summers starting my junior year of high school!  Worked there until I went to Wichita to Business College and often worked weekends when I came home for a visit, Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks, and even worked some after I started working at the First National Bank in Howard.  They were great to work for and they had some wonderful ladies who cooked there.  It was a fun place to work as I met a lot of people who traveled from Eastern Kansas to Wichita to work, and went home for the weekend back to Eastern Kansas.  Also people who "played" at the Fall River Lake, as well as local people and some from surrounding towns who frequented the cafe for a good meal.  The teenagers and young people also met there evenings and weekends!  Pat and Bob were very fond of young people and several of my friends worked there before and after me.  Pat was Mary Louise Patrick and graduated from Severy High School before she and Bob were married!  Yes, I have some great memories of working there and met lots of great people too!

I remember going there with my Dad after we would close the Corner.  Work at one -go to another.  Sort of our winding down.  Ot we would go to the one west of 99.  I know my Dad thought a lot of them.  Could not remember their name.  Thanks, Alice

I remember you and your Dad coming in to Pat & Bob's.  Also, your brother.  I also worked at the one on the west side of the junction when Russell and Opal Simmons owned it.  I was a Soph. when I worked there.  I started the spring of my soph. year and worked through the summer.  I would ride the school bus out after school (to both places) and work until closing time.  On Saturday night at Simmons' I would go at 6 P.M. and work until 2 A.M.  Somtimes, it would be 3 or 4 A.M. before the crowd slowed down after the dances and I could get things cleaned up enough to leave the rest of the help.  I quit there when school started and later went to Pat & Bob's and continued to work there after school through the spring of my junior year and all of my senior year.

Okay, our memories are working!  Wilma Morris worked for the folks and she would go with us sometimes.  We would close when ever we ran out of something that was really needed.  Depended on Dad's mood.  One night he said we would close when we ran out of milk.  Wilma and I were drinking milk like crazy and I think we were going to burst.  All so we could go to Severy.  I remember buying some cigarette (can't remember what you call them but they make the cigarette or cigar blow-up).  Put one in one of Dad's and he did not think it was funny.  Tried it on Johnny McSpadden and Junior Floyd but did not realize they chewed on them instead on smoking them.  Sort of wasted my money.  Thought it would be fun.  It was fun working in the cafe and later worked at the Dairy Bar in Moline.  You learn about people and meet many different types.  We use to open up late at night for the railroaders.  They would call and we'd go in and feed them.  They were a fun bunch!  Really!

I remember those cigarette loads!  We loaded some in my Dad's cigarettes a time or two!  He didn't like it either!!!  Our boys got some and I remember one time when Frank came home from being gone several days to California, I believe.  He had jet lag and when he got up after a nap, he lit a cigarette----unfortunately, he got one the boys had "fixed".  He wasn't a happy camper either!

OLD GRANNY I can see you as being the type that would put loads in someone's cigarettes.

When I was in cosmetology school - one of the students put one in my cigarette that I lit at break time -- I DID NOT think it was funny --- and come to find out, they had put them in ALL of the rest of the pack.  I acted naughty and had a connition fit!!
Never had that trick pulled on me again that year...it "kinda" makes you NOT A HAPPY CAMPER.   lol
