Miss Jean Sommers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Sommers of Chanute, and Mr. George E. Turner son of John Turner were married at Independence, Kansas, Court House by the Justice of Peace, B. E. Truesdell, Wednesday, October 13, 1943.
Mrs. Turner has been taking an apprentice course in telegraphy at the Santa Fe Station in Moline since May.  She worked a short time at Chanute.
Mr. Turner was graduated from the Moline high school and has attended the College of Emporia and the University of Kansas.  For the past two years he has been in England, as a radio man in the Civilian Tech. Corp.
They are undecided as their future plans.  Mr. Turner will report to Leavenworth in a short time for acceptance or rejection in the service of his country.

(As the story goes:  My grandfather Turner had befriended my mother.  He met her for lunch every day at the Corner Cafe.  He felt she was to young to be there by herself all the time, given all the young men hanging out at the saloon. One day he asked her if she would like to drive to Independence with him to pick up his son who was coming home from the war.  It must have been love at first sight for they got married a couple of weeks after they met.)   Then:

July 20,1944 Moline Advance

Born to Mr. and Mrs. George E. Turner, a girl, at the Johnson Hospital at Chanute, Friday, July 14.  The baby weighed 7 and 3/4 lbs. and has been given the name of Roma Jean.

Mom King who ran the Corner Cafe and Hotel was my Godmother.  I have very fond memories of visiting there.  She would always get a milk crate and put in front of the pin ball machine for me to stand on  and give me a roll of nickels.  Quite a treat for a little girl.

The Corner Cafe was part of my dad's daily routine. He would go get the mail and talk with the guys there. Then he would move to the cafe for a cup of coffee and talk. He used to say he would only have one cup of coffee a day. He never let it get below half a cup before he finished. That way he never drank a full cup. I guess that works. HA!
