INK SPOTS and 4-HERS To Highlight Howard Elk Co. Fair

Plans are being completed for what promises to be one of the greatest fairs in the history of the Howard Elk County Fair.

The entertainment program scheduled is of the caliber usually found only at the large county and state fairs.

Thursday afternoon will feature horse racing, with local participants making up the program.  This will include the usual kids' races, pony races, potato races and foot races, with home town and home county boys and girls, men and women, providing the excitement.

Thursday night fair goers will be treated to a two hour stage show of songs and music presented by the world famous "Ink Spots."  This famous recording group has appeared in many countries all over the world and in all of the major cities of the United States.  Local residents will have an opportunity usually shared only by residents of very large cities, where these entertainers perform in front of our grandstand.

Admission to fair grounds, except Saturday evening, will be $1.00 for adults or a season ticket.

Friday and Saturday, afternoons will feature professional horse racing, with some children's races added.

The 4-H Style Show will be at 8:00 p.m. Friday night.  The boys who participate in the Best Groomed Boy Contest, and the 4-H girls who have their garments judged August 3, will model their garments.

Along with the Style Show, the Elk County vocal ensemble will sing several numbers.  They are the 4-H'ers who were asked to attend the 4-H Round-Up at Manhattan to sing.  They were also asked to sing for the donors banquet at Rock Springs ranch.  The public is encouraged to come and see what the Elk county 4-H'ers have done.

The excitement begins at 9:00 p.m. Friday with the 4-H Calf Scramble in front of the grandstand.  Five calves and ten 4-H members from 12 to 15, will be turned loose.  The five 4-H'ers who get a rope on a calf first will be the winners.

At 1:30 p.m., Saturday, the results of the 4-H open class livestock judging will be viewed in front of the grandstand, in a 4-H and open class livestock parade.

The 4-H livestock, home economic exhibits, and other 4-H projects will be judged Friday, starting at 8:00 a.m.

Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. a shetland pony team pulling contest will be held, with teams entered from throughout southeast Kansas.  This should be a very interesting event, as these little ponies pull loads that are heavier than they are themselves.

There will be a gate charge of 50 cents per adult Saturday evening for this event, or a season's ticket.

The big Elk County Fair Dance will get underway at 9:00 p.m. Saturday evening with Billy Parker and his orchestra until ?

Used to be that during the fair each day at noon (exception Saturday, I think), there would be a parade down the main road to the grandstand.  Back when the entrance was further east than it is now.  The Howard fair was a big happening event.  And I remember a guy named Red Johnson, who used to cook the beans for the Bean feed.
