Speaking of states...

Kansas received its name from the Kanza tribe, although those people prefer to be called Kaw.

How many of the fifty U.S. states are either named after an Indian tribe or base its name on an Indian language word?

The answer may surprise you as many names have been absorbed into everyday American English language. Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas all have Indian names.


Here are two states that do not qualify as being named after Indians:

Delaware: There is a Delaware tribe but that tribe, the Lenape, renamed themselves after the Delaware River before they were forced to move west to Kansas and then to Oklahoma.

Indiana. Indiana is a created word with the meaning "land of Indians."
