Howard Courant

From Pittsfield, Illinois Democrat:  The remains of Mrs. Mary Hurst were brought to this city, Sunday, from her home at Howard, Kanss, where she passed away on Thursday.  The body was accompanied by her husband, Keenan Hurst, and her daughter, Mrs. Charles Barber, of this city, who was called to her bedside the first of the week.  Mrs. Hurst has been in failing health for several months and the recent death of her only son, Hal Shaw, or Olympia, Washington, seemed to sap her strength and vitallity to such a degree that death followed in just six short weeks after his.

Mary Louise, daughter of Joel and Abigail Pennington, was born at White Hall, Illinois, July 25, 1845.  When six years of age she came with her parents to this city, where most of her life was spent.  On December 28, 1865, she was married to George W. Shaw and into their home were born, Charles Otis, who died in infancy; Harry P. Shaw, who passed away November 12, and Minnie M., now the wife of Charles A. Barber.

Mr. Shaw died December 23, 1894, and in 1902 Mrs. Shaw was united in marriage with Keenan Hurst, of Howard, Kansas.  After thirteen years of happy married life she passed to the great beyond December 29.

There are left to mourn her passing one sister, Mrs. Emma Dickey, of this city; two brothers, William and Charles Pennington; the daughter, Mrs. Charles A. Barber; five grandchildren and one great grandchild and her husband.

She united with the Baptist church when eleven years of age, but later in life entered the Christian church of this city, where she held membership at the time of her death.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Barber home, Rev. D. N. Wetzel officiating, and interment was made beside Mr. Shaw, in the West cemetery.
