Sugar Rationing During World War II

     HOLD OLD SETTLERS REUNION AT HOWARD - The entire community of Howard joins with the officers of the Elk County Old Settler's Association in extending invitations to all former residents of Elk County to come to Howard on Friday, September 28, and meet their old friends and neighbors and enjoy a day of visiting.  Visitors are urged to load up their cars with friends who would like to be here for the occasion.  A short but interesting program has been arranged for the day.  The big feature event will be the picnic dinner at noon on the courthouse lawn.  The businessmen of Howard will provide plenty of hot coffee and cream, but visitors are asked to bring their own sugar with their picnic dinner.

Sugar rationing during WW II brings to mind an incident I was told about, regarding Don's mother.  Back then sugar and salt both came in a cloth sack, and their old kitchen cabinet had a glass container for sugar and it was about half full of sugar, and she picked up a sack to finish filling it up, only she never noticed she had picked up the salt instead, and finished filling the glass container up. When she noticed she poured the wrong thing in, she tried dipping as much of the salt out as what she could, the rest of it got mixed in with the sugar, so they had salt-sugar, but sugar was rationed, so they had to keep using it until they had it all used up, and Don thought they would never get it all used up.  Things tasted kinda weird for awhile.
