My great grandfather was Dr. Sylvester Lucas who was shot and killed in Howard in June 1886. Waldo Gray used this photo from our Lucas family album in his article about the shooting. The card mounted photo reads on the back "Howard City 1879" and bears a hand stamp of "F Schoffen" who was in a drug store partnership with Dr. Lucas at the time. The photo has been registered with the Kansas Historical Society. There are four people standing at the far left. The first man is unknown but the next I am convinced is my grandfather William Lucas at age 9 standing next to his mother, Sarah Elizabeth Lucas (my great grandmother and the doctor's first wife) and on the far right, the doctor himself. Dr. Lucas had a dwelling on Wabash Avenue in this location. The photo may have been taken by his partner: Felix Schoffen. The story of the shooting is an interesting one that i have tried to reseach over the last 53 years. I visited Howard in 1966 and met many interesting folks.
