Hazel Bernice Cain, age 100, of Moline, Kansas, passed away August 25, 2020 at her home.  She was born northeast of Longton, Kansas on May 30, 1920 to Otis and Viola (Keller) Buchanan, the youngest of three children.

In 1925, the family moved to Elk Falls, Kansas where she attended grade school at Stone School. She then graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1937.  On April 28, 1939, Bernice married Paul Cain in Eureka, Kansas.  Soon afterwards, the couple moved to New Albany, Kansas where they had a grocery store, feed store and ice house.  They left New Albany and headed to Parsons, Kansas in 1942.  They moved a couple of more times, but finally ended up back in Elk County where they would spend the rest of their lives.  Bernice and Paul raised three daughters and a son and were married 53 years until his passing in February 1992.

Bernice was an active lady, being a member of the Elk Falls Methodist Church for over 72 years, the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 70 years, the Kansas Rural Letter Carrier's Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Moline Chamber of Commerce.  She loved and held close to her heart her friends and family and would tell anyone that family was always more important than money.  Memories of her will be cherished, and she will forever be loved and missed by everyone that knew her.

Bernice is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Ford of Moline, Kansas, Lynda Myers of Lyndon, Kansas, and Wanda Mills-Malone and husband Leroy of Moline, Kansas; her son, Eldon Cain and wife, Susan of Brentwood, California; eleven grandchildren, Marilyn, Mike, Angie, David, Sonya, Gus, Shawn, Chelise, Stephanie, Adam, and Alex; twenty-one great-grandchildren, Tisha, Chrissy, Shelly, Bob, Elisha, Taylor, Madison, McKinley, Reagan, Justin, Kristen, Josh, Austin, Dylan, Tyler, T. J., Jaxson, Emery, Jayton, Luke, Tressa, and one arriving soon; and fourteen great-great grandchildren, Nile, Danny, Bekah, Augusta, Connor, Logan, Amelia, C.J., Olivia, Carson, Jade, Hensley, Kennedy, Kayley, and one arriving soon.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Cain; her sons-in-law, Leslie Ford, Ray Myers, and Tom Mills; her grandson, Steve Ford; her sister, Verna Wilson; and her brother, Everett Buchanan. 

Visitation for Bernice will be held on Friday, August 28, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home in Howard, Kansas.  Services will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at the Elk Falls United Methodist Church in Elk Falls, Kansas.  Interment will follow at Elk Falls Cemetery with an Eastern Star service.  At Bernice'e request, memorial contributions may be made to the Elk Falls United Methodist Church or the Moline Chamber of Commerce and can be mailed to or left with the funeral home.  Services have been entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home, 206 E. Washington, Howard, Kansas 67349.
