HOWARD---Willis Howard Miller, 92, died Dec. 18, 2005, at his home in Howard.  Services will be 1 p.m., Thursday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Gene DeWitt will officiate.  Military honors will be conducted by Carter-Rader American Legion Post 149 at Grace Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Carter-Rader American Legion Post 149.  Contributions may be left with the funeral home.

Miller was born July 10, 1913, on a farm north of Howard, to Jesse Howard and Martha Laura (Jolly) Miller.  He graduated from Howard High School in 1934 and attended Fort Scott Junior COllege.

On Jan. 6, 1936, he married Mary Caroline LaMont at Howard.  They operated a cattle ranch north of Howard until he entered the U. S. Marine Corps on Oct. 13, 1942.  He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was honorably discharged Nov. 26, 1945.

After the war, Miller operated their cattle ranch until becoming the Elk County treasurer in the late 1950s.  He later served as the Elk County clerk until becoming the postmaster of Howard in 1967. He retired as postmaster in 1974.

He and his wife made their winter home in Florida for four years during the later 1970s.  In 1980 they purchased property at the Mesa Regal RV Resort inMesa, Ariz., and remained active members of that community for 25 years.  They recently returned to their home in Howard where he had been receiving medical care.

Miller was a past commander and a 60- year member of Carter-Rader American Legion Post 149.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church and had served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superinitendent and deacon of the church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Caroline Miller, and his brother, Glenn D. Miller, both of Howard, and his sister, Nell Clark, Augusta.
