Bernadine "Bernie" Barnhart, age 86, a resident of Altoona, Kansas, passed away on September 23, 2019 at DiversaCare in Chanute, Kansas.  She was born August 10, 1938 in Longton, Kansas, the daughter of Olen and Maxine Trefethen.

Bernie grew up in Longton and attended Longton High School.  On March 12, 1988, she was united in marriage to James Barnhart, Jr.   He preceded her in death on December 30, 2010. 

Bernie worked as a CNA at Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas for over twenty years.  She enjoyed volunteering and helping with lunches at Verdigris Valley Christian Fellowship Church in Altoona, Kansas. 

Survivors include her caregivers, Jim and Stacy Raymond of Altoona, Kansas and her church family.  In addition to her husband, James, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Celebration of Life Funeral Service was held at the Verdigris Valley Fellowship Church in Altoona, Kansas on September 30, 2019.  Interment followed at the Altoona Cemetery in Altoona, Kansas.  Memorials are suggested to the Verdigris Valley Christian Fellowship, and contributions may be left with or mailed to the Wickham Family Funeral Home, 510 N. 7th, Fredonia, Kansas 66736 which was in charge of arrangements.
