Richard Weaver offered the best explanation for why the Southern tradition still has currency in modern society in his The Southern Tradition At Bay. He wrote, "The South possesses an inheritance which it has imperfectly understood and little used. It is in the curious position of having been right without realizing the grounds of its rightness."
