Mary Margaret "Margie" Taliaferro-Hukle, age 91 of Severy, Kansas, passed away March 23, 2019 at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, Kansas.  She was born September 12, 1927 in Eureka, Kansas to John and Lulavon (Speer) Flock. 

Margie was raised on a farm near Indian Creek southeast of Severy with her three siblings.  She grew up during the Great Depression.  Fun times were spent t family gatherings as well as swimming and fishing.  She attended Severy High School her freshman through junior years, but she graduated from Winfield High School in Winfield, Kansas in 1945 after the family moved from the farm. 

Margie began her teaching career that fall at a country school outside of Rock, Kansas after completing college courses at Southwestern College.  While raising a family and teaching full time, she took night and summer courses, earning her degree from Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia, in August of 1967.

On April 15, 1947, Margie and Raymond Taliferro were married.  Together they raised four boys.  Raymond passed away in 1986,.  In January 1998, she married Frank Hukle.  Frank passed away in 2004.

Margie was a wonderful cook, making sure her family ate a large breakfast together before leaving the house for chores or school each morning.  Then at the end of the day, she made sure everyone had a full meal at night, no matter how late everyone got back to the house. She sincerely loved people, wrote letters to friends and family, and read Bible stories to children.  She never took herself so seriously that she couldn't laugh at herself.  Later in life, she became the local historian and would give talks to many groups telling the history of Severy.

Margie is survived by her sons, Marty and wife, Helen Taliaferro of Severy, Kansas, Dana and wife, Christal Taliaferro of Severy, Kansas, and Scott Taliaferro of Wichita, Kansas; brother, Donald (Judy) Flock of Rockport, Massachusetts; sister, Beverly Fuqua of Peace Valley, Missouri; grandchildren, Jonathan (Cynthia) Taliaferro, Christopher (Tara) Taliaferro, Sarah (Gavin) Lutman, Lindsey (Kevin) Nieman, Matthew (Paige) Taliaferro, Darris Taliaferro, Christine Taliaferro, and Haley (Paul) Shattuck; and 12 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond Taliaferro; her son, Tim Taliaferro; her husband, Frank Hukle; and her brother, Ronald Flock..

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home in Howard, Kansas.  Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Severy, Kansas.  There willl be a private family burial to follow.  Following burial, friends are invited to a reception in the church annex.  Memorials in Mary Margaret's name can be made to West Elk Scholarship Fund and can be mailed to or left with the funeral home.  Services have been entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home, 206 E. Washington, Howard, Kansas 67349.
