Kurtis James Mitchell of Emporia, Kansas met his Savior and his Mom on February 2, 2019 at his home while surrounded by his wife and his children.  He was 52.  He was born August 21, 1966 in Sedan, Kansas to Nolan K. and Katherine O. (VanBuskirk) Mitchell.

Kurtis grew up in Howard, Kansas and graduated from West Elk Schools in Howard and then Emporia State University in 1989 with a Master of Science in Chemistry.  He married Julie Christine Norris on February 1, 1992, and four children were born to this union.  He was a wonderful husband and father.  His family meant everything to him.  Kurtis worked at Wolf Creek as a Chemist for 28 years.

Kurtis is survived by his wife, Julie Mitchell of the home; children, Heather Mitchell, Ashley Mitchell, Amber Mitchell, and Nicholas Mitchell, all of Emporia, Kansas; his father, Nolan Mitchell of Howard, Kansas; his sister, Kathy (Kent) Allison of Coffeyville, Kansas; and brothers, Ken (Mary) Mitchell and Kevin (Melinda) Mitchell, all of Howard, Kansas.  He is preceded in death by his mother, Katherine Mitchell.

A funeral service will be officiated by Rev. Joe Tuttle at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 8, 2019 at Bethel Baptist Church, 1300 W. 12th Avenue, Emporia, Kansas.  Burial will follow at Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia,  Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Baptist Church.
