Charles Russell "Russ" McDonald passed away on December 27, 2018 at the age of 97.  He was born September 27, 1921 in Busby, Kansas to Don and Cleora (Lanning) McDonald.

Russ married Barbara Smith on December 1, 1938.  As a young couple, they operated the Cream Station in Longton, Kansas. At the beginning of World War II, Russ went to work at the ordinance plant in Parsons, Kansas and remained there for the duration of the war.  He then started a long career in the propane gas business with positions in Elk Falls, Kansas, Wichita, Kansas, and Yates Center, Kansas.  He was later employed by Union Gas as District Manager for the Northeast Oklahoma area residing in Grove, Oklahoma.  He retired in 1986, and he and Barbara made their home in Howard, Kansas.

Russ loved to hunt and fish and made several trips to Minnesota and Canada on exciting fishing expeditions.  In later years, he liked to fish in the Moline and Howard lakes.  Branson, Missouri was one of his favorite vacation destinations where he would fish for trout and take in the music shows.  Russ was an avid gardener and spent many hours growing various kinds of vegetables.

Russ is survived by sons, Bob (Carolyn) and Jim (Janet); five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four nieces.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara; his parents; his brothers, Alwyn, Donald, and Fred; his sister, Doris; and his great-grandson, Bobby.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2018 at the Longton City Cemetery in Longton, Kansas.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.countrysidefh.com.  Memorial contributions in Russ's name are suggested to the Hope Lodge #155 A.F. & A.M. in Howard, Kansas and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home.  Services have been entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home, 206 E. Washington, Howard, Kansas 67349.
