Pauline A. Stewart passed away on Friday, Feb. 16, 2007 at the Medicalodge of Eureka, Kansas.  She was 92 years of age and a former resident of Howard and rural Severy.  Pauline was born on Oct. 19, 1914 at the family farm in McDonough County, Ill. to John Edwin and Lillian (Risser) Stickle.  She attended the rural school near her home in Illinois through the eighth grade.  After the death of her mother, Pauline moved to Wichita to live with her aunt.  She graduated from East High School in Wichita.  She attended the Wichita University then transferred to the University of Illinois to receive a degree in bacteriology in 1937.  Pauline spent the next year serving an internship at the Providence Hospital of Detroit, Mich. training in medical technology.  Upon receiving her certification in 1938, Pauline obtained a position in the medical labs at the Lima Memorial Hospital of Lima, Ohio.

On May 5, 1940, she married Troy James Stewart at Hillside Christian Church in Wichita.  Together, Pauline and Troy led a very active life.  She made a home for her family in Great Bend, Lawrence and Augusta, before returning to live the next 27 years in Wichita.  In 1970, Troy retired from the Boeing Corporation.  After being weekend farmers for many years, Pauline and Troy decided to pursue full-time farming.  They moved to their property southeast of Severy where they remodeled the Pleasant Plains schoolhouse into their new home.  In 1980, Pauline and Troy semi-retired, to become "snowbirds."  They spent their summers, farming, in Severy and the winters in Quartzsite, Ariz.  In 1991, due to her husband's ill health, they moved to town in Howard.  For the next several years, Pauline devoted herself to Troy's care.  She was preceded in death by her husband on March 5, 1997.  Pauline remained an active member of the Howard community until moving to the assisted living residence, the Gran Villa of Eureka in 2005.

Pauline was a life-time member of the charitable sorority Phi Beta Psi, serving as the national president from 1959-1961.  The purpose of this sorority was fund raising for cancer research.  She was active in the PTA, Book Club, and two bridge clubs in Wichita.  She was a member of Cosmos Club and the Four Seasons Bridge Clu of Severy.  She was an active member of the Town and Country Bridge Club of Howard until moving to the Gran Villa.

She is survived by her son, Paul and his wife Roslyn of rural Howard; and two greaddaughters, Kristen Bunch of Kansas, Mo. and Kelly Stewart of Pittsburg.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and three brothers, Wendell, Howard and Risser Stickle.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23 at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in howard with Lloyd G. Zimmerman officiating.  Cremation has taken place.  Private inurnment will be held at the family farm.  memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society.  Contributions may be left with the funeral home.  The funeral arrangements are being made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
