Waine L. Jones, 81, of Winfield, passed away Feb. 4, 2007, at the Kansas Veterans Home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. The family will greet friends following the service at the American Legion, 115 W. 10th Ave.

Memorials have been established for the American Heart Association and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Waine was born Aug. 15, 1925, in Sedan, to Earl E. and Jessie L. (Moreland) Jones. He received his education in Yates Center, graduating from Yates Center High School in 1943.

A veteran of World War II, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was stationed in Korea and was a second lieutenant at the time of his discharge.

Waine and Mary Anita Cole married on Aug. 25, 1948, in Yates Center, where they made their first home.

In 1957, he became a trooper for the Kansas Highway Patrol. In 1960, the couple moved to Winfield, and Waine was the first trooper assigned to Winfield. In 1970, they moved to Sedan, and Waine retired in 1976.

They moved to Colorado for a short time before returning to Sedan, where Waine served as the district magistrate judge for Chautauqua County until the mid-1980s. They returned to Winfield until 2000, when they moved to Dewey, Okla.

Waine's hobbies included the outdoors, golf, music and learning about his grandkids' activities.

His wife, Mary, died on May 14, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include a son, Richard Jones, and wife, Dee, Dewey; two daughters, Jenny Loyd, and husband, J.B., Winfield, and Jolene Yelken, and husband, Mark, Vashon, Wash.; a brother, Richard E. Jones, and wife, Marilyn, Independence; and five grandchildren, Casey Loyd, Jennifer Jones, Tanner Yelken, Molly Jones and Lara Yelken.

(Waine Jones was one of the troopers working the Chautauqua County area when I first dispatched in Sedan, Kansas, in 1980.  Trooper Jones had a lot to do with my decision to be in law enforcement. JJH)
