Paul Lawrence Pitts passed away on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007 at his home northwest of Howard.  He was 94 years of age and a former resident of Independence.  Paul was born on Dec. 11, 1912 at Gray, Ga. to Daniel harrison and Etta Cornelia (Gray) Pitts.  He graudated from high school in Georgia and later attended three years of college.

On May 26, 1941, he joined the United States Army and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.  After his discharge on Sept. 7, 1945, Paul moved to California where he was employed as a carpenter.  he lived in Chicago and Detroit before moving to Independence.  Paul was a police offier in independence and also worked as a carpenter and taught carpentry classes at Independence Community College.  He retired from the Independence Police Department in 1980.

On Sept. 4, 1987, he married Lucile Florence Daly at Chicago, Ill.  They moved to their farm northwest of Howard in 1990.

Paul was a member of the Kingman's Club at Independence and attended the Howard Independent Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Lucile Daly-Pitts; his sons, Michael Lowe of Howard, Lawrence Pitts of Raytown, Mo., Jason Pitts of Grandview, Mo. and Aaron Pitts of San Diego, Dalif.; a step-son, Bernard Morris of Columbus, Ga.; a sister, Sue Hyde of Chicago; 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Howard Independent Baptist Church with Pastor Darrell Spicer officiating.  Cremation has taken place.  Private inurnment will be held at the family farm.  memorials have been established with the Howard Independent Baptist Church and the Greenwood County Hospice.  Contributions may be left with the funeral home.  The funeral arrangements are being made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
