Michael C. Smith, 69, of Severy, Kansas, passed away June 15, 2017 at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas.  Born August 31, 1947 in Blue Island, Illinois, he was the son of James Cullen and Juanita (Espanosa) Smith.

Mike was raised and received his education in Cook County, Illinois, graduating from Catholic school.  Following school, Mike joined the United States Army and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on March 28, 1969.

Mike was united in marriage to his longtime companion, Cindy (Ramsey) Watts on May 30, 2015 in El Dorado, Kansas.  The couple made their home in Severy, Kansas.  Mike worked as a painter all his life.  He worked in the aircraft industry and was also self-employed as a painter.  He enjoyed tinkering with lawn mowers and cars, pickin', singing karaoke, and dancing.  He was an avid jokester.

His family includes his wife, Cindy Smith of Severy, Kansas; his children, J.R. Garza, Loretta Smith, Michael Smith, Michelle Brown, Havier Smith, and Robbie Smith, all of Wichita, Kansas; his foster son, Chris Fitchett; his sisters, Jean Hastings and husband, Ron of El Dorado, Kansas and Patty Saldana of Wichita, Kansas; his aunt, Lupe Veasey of Wichita, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his brothers, Pat, James, and Danny Smith and a sister, Susie Phillips.

Funeral services were held on June 21, 2017 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas.  Interment and military committal honors followed at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery.  A memorial has been established in Mike's name for the Wounded Warrior Project.  Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service, 4001 E. 9th Avenue,  Winfield, Kansas 67156 which was in charge of arrangements.
