Helen Alice Hinkle, age 102, longtime resident of Howard, Kansas,  passed away in Eureka, Kansas on December 5, 2016 at Greenwood County Hospital surrounded by loved ones.  She was born on April 20, 1914 in rural Piedmont, Kansas, the daughter of Vernon and Lucy Edna (Fee) Adams.

Helen graduated from Piedmont High School and entered into the business of sales, selling Stanley Home Products for many years.  On December 23, 1937, she married Clifford Orren Hinkle in Joplin, Missouri.  She settled down to be a homemaker and the mother of two children, Louise and DuWayne.

Helen was devoted to the Lord, and it showed through everything she did.  She became a member of the Howard Christian Church, and when it closed its doors, she attended the Howard United Methodist Church.  Besides caring for her family, she cared for her friends, driving all over Elk County to transport people to various events, something that she found very difficult to give up just before entering assisted living arrangements in Eureka.

Helen loved to quilt, tearing pieces of material apart and creating beautiful quilts for home, family, and friends.  She made many a quilt for church bazaars and the fairs, and each of her six grandchildren have received handmade quilts from their grandmother.  She also had quite a reputation for her gooseberry pies which always brought top dollar at many events.

Helen is survived by six grandchildren, Jennifer Harrod of Crete, Nebraska, Jeanette (Leonel) Garduno of Crete, Nebraska, Jerald (Barbi) Morgan of Howard, Kansas, Gayle (Lyman) Covey  of Valley Center, Kansas, Kim (Paul) Harrison of Wichita, Kansas, and Scott (Amy) Hinkle of Liberal, Kansas.  She is also survived by her son-in-law, Curtis Morgan of Howard, Kansas; her sister, Georgia Ambler of Tacoma, Washington; her nephew, Cole (Jeannie) Conard of Severy, Kansas, niece, Carey (Ed) Triboulet of Moline, Kansas; niece and nephew-in-law, Betty and Barney Gillett of Howard, Kansas; 10 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford; her daughter, Anita "Louise" Morgan; her son, Wallace DuWayne Hinkle; her grandson, Jeffrey; and her siblings, Vera Mae, Frances, Louella, Elmer, and Stanley.

Her family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 12, 2016 at Countryside Funeral Home, 206 E. Washington, Howard, Kansas.  Services honoring her life will be held at Countryside Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Stacy Ellsworth officiating.  Burial will follow at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard.

The family has suggested memorials to the Howard United Methodist Church, and they may be left with the funeral home or mailed to Countryside Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1233, Howard, Kansas 67349 which is in charge of arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.countrysidefh.com
