Austin A. Fickle was born at Abington, Virginia, on May 9, 1842. He was married to Mary Catherine Smith in December 1856 and to this union were born 7 children.  His wife, two daughters and one son have preceded him to the great beyond.

He came to Kansas with his family in 1872 and located in Cowley county and resided there seven years.  He then moved to Elk county and located on his farm about half way between Howard and Moline.  He retired from the farm and moved to Howard in 1908 where he has made his home ever since.

He leaves to mourn his departure three sons and one daughter, Charley Fickle of Independence, Emmett and Richard Fickle of Howard, and Marsha DeVoe of Howard, where he has made his home for several years.  He leaves ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

At the age of 37 he was converted and baptized at Cambridge, Kansas and afterwards was a member of the Christian church at Moline.

Funeral services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. DeVoe at 3 p.m., Wednesday, November 29th, conducted by Mrs. Belle Reid Yates of Grenola, assisted by Rev. G. R. Lawellin of the Howard M. E. church.  Burial was in Grace Lawn cemetery.
