The University Greys (Company A of the 11th Mississippi Infantry Regiment, CSA)  consisted almost entirely of  students from the University of Mississippi.  During the Battle of Gettysburg, in Pickett's Charge, the University Greys advanced further than any other Confederate unit, actually breaking through the Union lines -- but at a terrible cost, 100% casualties, dead and wounded. 

Times have changed.  Forget all about the University Greys. Black athletes and political correctness are now far more important to Old Miss.

Which school fired the first shots of the Civil War?

On April 12, 1861. The first shots of the Civil War against Fort Sumter and a US Warship trying to reach the fort were fired from an artillery battery manned by students from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. The School went on to fight in eight Civil War battles against the Union and today has eight grey battle streamers attached to its regimental colors--a US flag, no less.
