Dorothy J. Smith, age 88, of Sedan, Kansas and formerly of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Monday, July 20, 2015 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan. Kansas.  She was born on January 12, 1937 in Leeds, Kansas in rural Chautauqua County to Harry Sutton and Inez (Wonser) Sutton.

Dorothy was raised in the Grenola, Kansas area before graduating from Grenola High School.  On Mary 7, 1945, she married Barton T. Smith, and they lived for many years in Cedar Vale.  Dorothy worked as a Certified Medical Aide at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan for 13 years.  She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and quilting.

Dorothy is survived by one son, Barton Smith of Independence, Kansas; one brother, Edgar Sutton; three sisters, Mabel Henson and husband, Louis, Louise Chrisman and husband, Ross, and Pat Rusteberg and husband, Norm; 2 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband on December 19, 1983; four brothers; and one sister.

Church services will be held Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Sedan, Kansas with Pastor John Warring officiating.  Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.  To leave a message for the family, please go to www.dickens-funeral.com.  The family has suggested memorials to the Friends of the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter or First Christian Church.  These remembrances may be left in care of the Dickens Family Funeral Home, 209 N.
