But who among the tribes of the Middle East will fight and die for the secular American values of democracy, diversity, pluralism, sexual freedom and marriage equality?
-Pat Buchanan

They don't want the American state religion, says Patrick J. Buchanan.

I don't see anything about "comandments" in the article.  This does show the fundamental misunderstanding that common Americans have about the situation in Iraq.  The article recognizes that the Iraqi army at one time was a brave and formidable fighting force, and then wonders what's wrong with the current Iraqi army.  I guess What Buchanan forgot was that ISIS is primarily made up of well trained FORMER IRAQI ARMY MEMBERS.  When Bush and his lackey Paul Bremer disbanded the Iraqi Army, the soldiers just joined the resistance.  Ask any US military member and they'll tell you that ISIS is just the latest transformation of the same people we've been fighting for 13+ years.

The Iraq invasion was a catastrophe from the beginning, partially because our government didn't understand how things work over there.  They don't get the Shiite Sunni dynamic.  We still don't get it, and instead of trying to figure it out, we insist on continuing to make it worse.

I respect Buchanan, because back when Bush wanted to invade, he was one of the few conservatives who was willing to stand up to the warmongers while every bandwagon riding idiot (democrats included, and many people who frequented this forum) put their head in the sand.  But Buchanan should realize that he didn't understand Iraq back then, and he definitely doesn't understand it now.

What I will agree with is that the west and its allies does not have what it takes to win.  This conflict can not be won militarily.  Only a political solution can be found, and it starts with justice for the palestinians.  When Israel is forced abandon their aparthied regime, you can being eroding away the recruiting and radicalization tools used but ISIS and other extremist groups to attract new soldiers.

Kinda like having a political solution here?

The liberals/socialists remain in control as tyrants.
