Mary Jane "Janie" Bales, age 63, of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas and formerly of Eureka and Yates Center, Kansas, died Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas.  The daughter of Cleve A. and Joan (Weyrauch) Knight, she was born February 21, 1952 in Eureka, Kansas.

Janie and R. Leon Bales were married August 12, 1983 in Yates Center, Kansas.  She worked as a dispatcher for EMS in Eureka, Kansas, a Deputy Sheriff in Yates Center, Kansas, and a dietary aide at the Pine Crest Nursing Home in Humboldt, Kansas until ill health forced her to retire in 2007.  She and Leon moved to Cottonwood Falls in April 2009.

She is survived by her husband, Leon of the home; two brothers, Steve Knight and Randy Knight (Rosie), both of Hamilton, Kansas; two sisters, Becky Snovelle of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas and Shawnda Stone (Ron) of Linwood, Kansas; 8 nieces and nephews; 18 great-nieces and nephews; and 2 great-great-nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a stepson, Greg Bales.

Cremation has been effected.  A gathering to share memories will be held Saturday, April 11, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home, 201 Cherry Street, Cottonwood Falls, Kansas 66845.  A private inurnment will be held in the Neal Cemetery in Neal, Kansas at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.  Condolence messages may be left at www.brown-bennett-alexander.com.

Mary Jane "Janie" and her family lived in the Elk County area during her childhood.  She attended Howard schools for awhile during her elementary years.  Her grandparents were Frank and Lillian Knight and John and Jessie Weyrauch, all of the Elk and Greenwood County areas.
