When the Yankees Come:  Former South Carolina Slaves Remember the Invasion

I remembers very little about the war, although I was a good size boy when the Yankees come. By instinct, a nigger can make up his mind pretty quick about the creed of white folks, whether they am buckra[1] or whether they am not. Every Yankee I see had the stamp of poor white trash on them. They strutted around, big Ike fashion, a busting in rooms without knocking, talking free to the white ladies, and familiar to the slave gals, ransacking drawers, and running their bayonets into feather beds, and into the flower beds in the yards.
