Richard Eugene Smith, age 79, a resident of Burden, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at his home.  He was born February 11, 1935 in Enid, Oklahoma, the son of Earl and Edna (Harmon) Smith.

Richard served in the United States Army from February 1954 to February 1956.  On December 6, 1980, he was united in marriage to E. Maurine Brown-Mitchell at the Burden United Methodist Church.  He worked as a grain inspector in Enid for many years, and he retired as a supervisor from the Winfield State Hospital in Winfield, Kansas.  Richard had a strong faith in the Lord and a strong sense of morals.  He enjoyed painting, drawing his own cartoon strip, woodworking, shooting guns, fishing, taking care of animals, and going to the Farmer's Market.

Richard is survived by his wife, Maurine Smith of the home; his children, Dottie Ferguson of Cedar Vale, Kansas, Deborah Kimmell of Arkansas City, Kansas, DeeAnna Widener of Arkansas City, Kansas, Dee Ann Van Seyoc of Valley Center, Kansas, Rick Smith of Wichita, Kansas, Randy Smith of Wichita, Kansas, and Twilla Kahm of Arkansas City, Kansas; his stepchildren, David Mitchell of Udall, Kasns, Deborah Mitchell of Owings Mills, Maryland, Julie Olmsted of Derby, Kansas, and Mark Mitchell of Udall, Kansas; one brother, Earl Smith of Enid, Oklahoma; 23 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; 5 sisters; and one grandchild, Sky Widener.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2014 at the Burden United Methodist Church in Burden, Kansas with Rev. Kathryn Graver officiating.  Viewing will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.  Interment will be at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard, Kansas.  Memorials are suggested to either the Burden United Methodist Church or the United Methodist Women and may be left with the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com.  Arrangements are under the direction of Countryside Funeral Home, 206 E. Maurine Brown Smith, wife of Richard Smith, grew up in Howard and graduated from Howard High School.  Her parents were  Paul and Mildred Brown of Howard.
