Freda S. Bureman, age 99, of Independence, Kansas, died July 8, 2014 at the Eagle Estates in Independence, Kansas.  She was born February 8, 1915 in Elk County, Kansas to Frank D. and Nellie Edith (Lawyer) Shelby.

Freda grew up in Elk County, Kansas near Moline.  In 1933, she graduated from Moline High School.  She then attended Independence Junior College and Pittsburg Teachers College before graduating from Fort Hays State University.  On June 17, 1939, Freda married Sherman Allen Brown, and the couple made their home in Burrton County and Russell County.  "Brownie" preceded her in death on April 2, 1952.  Freda taught grade school in Elk, Burrton, and Russell counties and Kinsley, Kansas for over 30 years, retiring in 1977.  On November 9, 1977, Freda married Ralph Bureman, and the couple made their home in Newton, Kansas.  Ralph preceded her in death on January 22, 1987.  Freda was a member of the First Christian Church. 

Survivors include eight children:  Lou Jean Fleron and husband, Jack Williams of Buffalo, New York, Jan and husband, Don Barnes of Soda Springs, Idaho, Ken and wife, Becky Brown of Independence, Kasnas, Mike and wife, Rita Bureman of Golden, Colorado, David and wife, Karen Bureman of Hampton, Virginia, Andrea Bureman of Locust Grove, Virginia, Jim and wife, Sherry Bureman of Springfield, Missouri, and Phil and wife, Lori Bureman of Olathe, Kansas; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.  She is preceded by her granddaughter, Yona Julian, and grandson, Brian Williams.

Celebration of Life services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2014 at the First Christian Church in Independence, Kansas with Rev. Terry Hatfield officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.  The family has suggested memorials to the Yona Julian Scholarship Fund, and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel, 122 S. Penn Avenue, Independence, Kansas 67310 which is in charge of arrangements.
