Barbara Jean Powell, age 86, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, Kansas.  She was born October 28, 1927 in Howard, Kansas to Russell "Hop" McSpadden and Clara Belle (Wright) McSpadden.

Barbara grew up in Howard before moving to El Dorado, Kansas where she graduated from high school.  She attended college at Emporia State University.  On September 15, 1944, she married Wayne D. "Dutch" Powell in Sedan, Kansas, and he survives at Pleasant Valley Manor.

She was a lifelong resident of the Sedan area.  She taught dance lessons, tap dance and ballroom dance just to name a few.  She also gave piano lessons for a number of years.  She eventually received her Bookkeeping Degree from Coffeyville Community College and worked for Dewey Pipe and Supply in Dewey, Oklahoma and then for Bob Miller and Johnny Thomas at the Chautauqua County Shop and Supply.

Barbara was a member of Epiphany Episcopal Church in Sedan, Kansas.  She played the organ at the church.  She also enjoyed playing the piano.  She loved to cook, watch baseball, and enjoyed watching all of her grandkids play ball.

Survivors in addition to her husband include two daughters, Annette McMillin (David) of Independence, Kansas and their children, Scott McMillin and Megan McMillin Walker, Kimberly Schmidt of Spring Hill, Kansas and her children, Tricia Masterson and Brandon Carra; one son, Larry Powell (Cindy) of Sedan, Kansas and their children, Brett, Blake, Sam, and Paula; and a granddaughter, Nicole Boulanger Hinkle of Copan, Oklahoma.  Barbara is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Russell Wayne Powell, and one daughter, Paula Powell Boulanger.

Church services will be held at the Epiphany Episcopal Church, 309 W. Elm Street, Sedan, Kansas at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 31, 2014 with Rev. Foster Mayes officiating.  Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.  Family visitation will be held prior to service time on Monday.  The family has suggested memorials to the Sedan High School Music Department or the Friends of the Chautauqua Animal Shelter.  These donations may be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
