Walter Calvin Workman, 83, of Independence, died Sunday at St. John's Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., after suffering a stroke.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Memorial United Methodist Church in Independence with Pastor Robin Haines of Howard officiating.  Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard.

Visitation will be at the church prior to the service.

Memorials are suggested to Grace Memorial United Methodist Church, and they may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.

Mr. Workman was born on oct. 20, 1923 near Longton to Roy and Clara (Harper) Workman.  He graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1941.

Mr. Workman served in the United States Army in the 591st Field Artillery Battalion during World War II.  After his discharge from the Army he returned to live in Kansas.

On Aug. 15, 1947, he married Ruth Russell in Independence and they later moved to Wichita where he was employed for many years as a custodian for the Wichita public schools.  They returned to Independence after his retirement, and she survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Joe, Carthage, Mo., and Robert, Bentonville, Ark.; a daughter, Marsha Filbin, Monterey, Calif.; a brother, Gene, Haysville, Kansas; and six grandchildren.
