Shirley (Rutherford) Haigler, age 101, a former resident of Howard, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at the Dillon Living Center in Hutchinson, Kansas.  She was born December 16, 1911 in Howard to Arthur VanMeter Rutherford and Mary Viola (Martin) Rutherford.

Shirley attended school in Howard and graduated from Howard High School.  She then went on to graduate from the Wichita Business College.  She married Martin Haigler on June 19, 1932 in Howard, and in 1982, they celebrated their golden anniversary with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Shirley was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hutchinson, Kansas and the Silver Leaf Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.  She held several stations in the Eastern Star and became Worthy Matron in 1965.  She was a Grand Representative of New Mexico in Kansas for 3 years.  She was a member of the Order for over 60 years.

Shirley is survived by her four sons, Dan and wife, Betty of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jack and wife, Mary of Canon City, Colorado, Glen and wife, Laura of Ft. Scott, Kansas, and Clark of Bakersfield, California; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin; and 8 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2013 at Countryside-Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, Kansas with Pastor Jeanine Rishel of the First United Methodist Church of Hutchinson officiating.  Visitation will be Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  Interment will follow at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard.  Memorials are suggested to the Order of the Eastern Star and may be sent to the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com.  Arrangements are entrusted to Countryside-Zimmerman Funeral Home, 206 E. Washington, Howard, Kansas 67349.

I'm sorry I never knew Shirley but our family was good friends with her brother and sister-in-law, Curt and Winnie Rutherford.  They were great people.
