Open access to research, advocated by 'hacktivist,' long a focus at KU

Mar 11, 2013, 7:36am CDT

The suicide of Aaron Swartz, who pushed to make information freely available, has helped to prompt a national debate about whether scholarly research should be freely available to the public.

But the Lawrence Journal-World reports the University of Kansas has been a leader in open access for years. Lorraine Haricombe, KU's dean of libraries, will chair a steering committee for the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Commission, which pushes for better access to scholarly research.

She argues that taxpayers funded much of the research through federal grants, and that they should be able to access it without large journal subscription fees.

The White House appears to agree with the cause, at least to a point. NBC News reports the Obama administration has called upon federal agencies to develop plans for how they can make studies they fund freely available within 12 months of publication.
