We take for granted the scientific contributions of Renaissance era scientist and mathematician Nicolaus Copernicus. Despite imminent hostile ridicule from the scientific community and potentially severe punishment for heresy, Copernicus courageously defied the Church and proved, by using his formulated comprehensive heliocentric model, that the Sun was the center of our solar system and that Earth rotated around it, not the other way around. His revolutionary discoveries turned upside-down the beliefs of our world during that period. Born February 19, 1473, the 540th birthday of Copernicus is celebrated today..
