John Robert Ashley, age 80, of Fall River, Kansas, died Friday, January 18, 2013 at Fredonia Regional Hospital in Fredonia, Kansas.  John was born on May 10, 1932 in Junction City, Kansas, the son of Sherman and Zelma (Martin) Ashley Sr.

John was a graduate of Morganville High School. He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War.  On May 13, 1966, John married Esther D. Smith in Junction City, Kansas.  They were married for 42 years until her death on April 14, 2009.

John worked as a welder for Boeing in Wichita, Kansas.  In his spare time, he enjoyed going fishing and hunting.  He enjoyed welding things that were a challenge.  He loved to work in his garden and try to grow new and different vegetables.  John always had a pet and enjoyed spending time with them. 

John is survived by daughter, Trenna and husband, Tony Logston of Andover, Kansas and Gae Lynn Ashley of Wichita, Kansas; stepsons, Eddie Saville and Fred Saville, both of Fall River, Kansas; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther; three brothers, Dan, Dean, and Sherman Ashley Jr.; and three step-siblings, Irene Benton, Lewis Roberts, and James Roberts.

There will be no public service.  The family has suggested memorials to Adopt-A-Family, and those may be left with or mailed to the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com.  Services have been entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home, 420 S. 20th Street, Fredonia, Kansas 66736.
