Jar, speaking of Marines, were there supposed to be some guarding the Embassy? I will have to check that out. Even if there were, I am sure they were out-manned.

As far as I know all US embassies have Marine guards. The first reports said some of them were killed but about an hour ago the Pentagon had a release and said that report was erroneous and no Marines were killed. Maybe the Marine detachment are like the NG troops put on our southern border a couple years back---you can strut around with a weapon but without ammo---and that, I wouldn't doubt.
I can't get away from the TV or computer today, just hoping  that any moment there will be a news flash saying that Tripoli is nothing but a smoking pile of rubble---and the Stealth bombers are going back to re-arm---and to borrow a line from Arnold, "I'll be back "

Take control of all the tankers and cargo ships registered in Libya. By force is necessary.  We see them here quite often. Then take a good look at how the military JAG corps are running things now. They are causing real problems. Apparently when there are civilians around the officers have to get "permission" to order fire. Someone please tell me this is bogus!

If he wants to get reelected showing some spine right now would help.

I need to make some corrections.  This was not an embassy, but a consulate, as if that makes any difference.  As far as Marine guards, one source says they were there and fired on the attackers.  Another source says consulates don't rate a Marine guard.  It will be interesting to see where that goes.  One source says a Marine was injured and the Marines are saying none of them were injured.  A local (SoCal) muslim group is denouncing the whole thing saying that this was an radical group who violated Islamic law.  Their spokesperson said, "A anti-Muhammad film made by an extremist Jew, mocking the prophet Muhammad, insulted the Islamic faith and an extremist Islamic group took the bait and reacted in a violent manner, going against Islamic law and committing horrendous crimes."

Wait and see, I guess.

Side note:

Having been stationed in a majority Muslim country (Turkey) for 2 years, I'm painfully aware of the existence of their 'insult' laws & the impact of those on westerners (especially those born under American free speech rules).  I'm a firm believer in the "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" philosophy.  But this reaction was to something done by a non-Roman while not in Rome.  Have we become so 'globalfied' as to stand for punishment by proxy as appears to be the case here?

Or was this really just an extensive commemoration of 9/11 by some of the same anti-west mentality that brought down the twin towers 11 years ago?  Have we forgotten?

...let's get the Justice Department to go after that American who made the flick that supposedly set this whole thing off.  And shame You Tube for keeping it up for all to see. That'll show those peace loving terrorists we're serious!

Sheeet... I go and play golf this morning, first time in 3 weeks since I hurt my shoulder and I come back to this crap in Libya...  and to boot, Larryj is doing politics.  Did some checking and this is what I came up with:

This is what I got on this:

I understand the consulate is a one-story villa located in a fenced garden in downtown Benghazi and no marine guards.  A small contingent of Libyan security forces protecting the facility also fired in the air, trying to intimidate the crowd, according to the deputy interior minister of Libya's eastern region.

The way it went down is anyones guess... details of how the Americans were killed were still being pieced together but, according to dep. minister's account, Stevens went to Benghazi to pickup the american and bring them to Tripoli.  Two distinct attacks took place he said Stevens and a consulate staffer who had stayed behind in the building were killed in the initial attack on the consulate.  The rest of the staff successfully evacuated to another building nearby, preparing to move to Benghazi Airport after daybreak to fly to the capital, Tripoli, he said.  Hours after the storming of the consulate, a separate group of gunmen attacked the other building, opening fire on the more than 30 Americans and Libyans inside.  Two more Americans were killed and 32 wounded... 14 Americans and 18 Libyans, he said.

The Doctor who treated Stevens, told the Press that he died of asphyxiation, apparently from smoke.  In a sign of the chaos during the attack, Stevens was brought by Libyans to the Benghazi Medical Center with no other Americans and no one at the facility knew who he was.  Stevens was practically dead when he arrived and they tried to revive him for an hour and a half, but with no success.  The doctor said he was bleeding in his stomach because of the asphyxiation but had no other injuries.

There will probably be a number of stories out before the real facts are given as to what really happened.

Why no Marine guard, you ask?

That's easy.  U.S. embassies, particularly in unstable or less secure nations, usually have a resident contingent of Marine security guards.  Early indications were that there were not at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.  This consulate is a branch office of the embassy in Tripoli.  These guards work under the supervision of the senior diplomatic officer at an embassy which was Amb. Stevens and Stevens probably felt they were not needed...  he relied on Libby security.  What I understand is Stevens was pretty much of a peacenik.  Anyway, the main role of Marine security guards is to protect classified national security documents, FIRST... and their secondary role is to protect U.S. citizens and U.S. government property in the event of an emergency.  It has always been that way since WW2.  It is really the host country's responsibility to provide adequate security for all diplomats inside their country.  I understand that a FAST Marine team is on its way to Tripoli.

Thanks Warph. I saw on TV this evening that we give Egypt $1.3 billion a year---and for what---so they can burn our Embassy . The talking head on TV  thinks we should withhold the three million , but give them the  billion, until the president of Egypt promises us it won't happen again. It is insane. I can picture them dancing around a campfire made of camel chips they gathered from the desert, shooting their AK-47's into the air why they celebrate to our stupidity for buying their weapons with the $1.3 billion a year we give them !!!!
