George K. "Pete" Downs, age 89, owner of Big Western Automotive Warehouse in Derby, Kansas, passed away July 14, 2012 at his home.  He was born December 13, 1927 in Grenola, Kansas and lived in Cedar Vale, Kansas for 23 years.

After serving in the U. S. Army, Pete married Dolores Hoffman, and they resided in the Derby, Kansas area.  His most pleasurable activities were bowling, playing cards, and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Dolores Downs; children, Shirley (Steve) Beal of Bonner Springs, Kansas, Sharon (Jerry) Powell of Andover, Kansas, Robert (Kathy) Downs of Derby, Kansas, Mary (Ron) Kiper of Mulvane, Kansas, and Connie (Kurt) Byars of Rose Hill, Kansas; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.  Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Isa and Ed Downs; sister, Faye Lawless; brothers, Edward and Donald; and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Smith Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Road in Derby, Kansas.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, Kansas 67202.  Send condolences via www.smithfamilymortuaries.com.
