Special county commission meeting today...

The Elk County Board of Commissioners held a special meeting at 4 PM today. 

The meeting concerned a proposal for repairs to the new courthouse roof (water damage and repairs to gutters, etc.).  Damage that was identified when the new roof was installed, but we refused to fix because "we didn't have the money." 

Of course, at the time nobody ever asked about the $1 million or so we had in the bank in CDs.   

All I can say is, "Wow, what a mess." 

So a job that would have cost around $30K to fix at the time, now looks like it may cost as much as $80,000 now.  Are we getting competitive bids for this work?  No.  Are we going to verify materials requirements with the Kansas Historical Society?  No.  Are we going to require a performance bond as recommended by our county counselor?  No.  How about the completion bond he recommended?  No.  Post completion inspections by an independent engineer/architect to verify the work is properly done... before final payment is made?  Gee, do we need that, and who would do it? Let's ask the contractor doing the work for a recommendation.

After all, according to Commissioner Liebau, the contractor will warrant the work for 5 years... in this economy, let's hope they are still around in 5 years.  Of course, also according to Liebau and Ms Montgomery, since they did the new roof several years ago, and we 'like em', it'll be OK.

Speaking of Ms Montgomery, our Youth Development Coordinator was into this up to her earlobes... doesn't make good management sense to me either.  Of course, the Maintenance Super had some input too.... as it should be, IMO.

Oh well, it's just money.... YOUR MONEY!  Someday I hope we can leave the good ole boy processes and move into the 20th century, if not the 21st...  Or at least LOOK like we passed some basic business courses!
