Marcia Moore

Velma (Coble) Holliday, 97, was born May 17, 1914 in Dennis, Labette County, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Samuel Sr. & Eva Ethel May (Watkins) Coble.

She attended common school in Elk County, Kansas at Pleasant Plains School Dist. #68B and graduated from Fall River High School in Fall River, Kansas with the Class of 1933.  On Jan. 23, 1935, Velma was united in marriage to Hallie Holliday at Howard, Kansas.  The couple had one son, Douglas Hal Holliday.  Velma was a member of the Severy United Methodist Church.
   
Mrs. Holliday passed away Monday, April 23, 2012 in El Dorado, Kansas.  She is survived by her son, Doug, of El Dorado, Kansas; one sister, Helen Cravens of Denver, Colorado; and seven grandchildren – Caroline Scott, Debbie Glendening and Sherry Stevenson, all of El Dorado, Kansas; Velma Conklin of Grenola, Kansas; and Carl, Don and Rodney Marrs, all of Kansas City, Kansas.  Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Hallie, on Aug. 23, 1996;  her parents;  three brothers – Charles Samuel Jr., Fred, and Joseph William Coble; and two sisters, Orlie Thelma Glenn and Carrie Mae Glenn.
   
Graveside services will be held at South Lawn Cemetery in Severy on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Tony Pameticky officiating.  Services are under the direction of Countryside Funeral Home.

Velma Holliday, age 97, a resident of El Dorado, Kansas and formerly of Severy, Kansas passed away Monday, April 23, 2012 at Lakepoint Nursing Center in El Dorado. She was born in Dennis, Kansas on May 17, 1914, the daughter of Charlie Samuel and Eva Ethel (Watkins) Coble. She was the third child born of seven children.

Velma attended Common school in Elk County at Pleasant Plains School District #68B and graduated from Fall River High School with the class of 1933. On January 23, 1935 she married David Hallie Holliday at Howard, Kansas. Velma began her married life as a farm wife and worked beside Hallie on the farm southeast of Severy. She was the treasurer for the Severy United Methodist Church for over twenty years. Velma resided on the farm until 1999 when she sold the farm and moved to El Dorado.

Velma is survived by her son Douglas Hal Holliday of El Dorado, Kansas, seven grandchildren; Caroline Scott of El Dorado, Kansas, Velma Conklin of Grenola, Kansas, Carl, Don, Rodney Marrs of Kansas City, Kansas, Debbie Glendening and Sherry Stevenson both of El Dorado, Kansas, one sister Helen Craven of Denver, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hallie on August 23, 1996, two sisters; Orlie Thelma Glenn and Carrie Mae Glenn and three brothers; Charlie Coble, Fred Coble and Joseph Coble and one daughter-in-law Magdalina Holliday.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2012 at South Lawn Cemetery in Severy, Kansas with Rev. Tony Pameticky officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Family suggests memorials to the Severy United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association and may be left with the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Countryside – Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard, Kansas.

Yes, she did, Carl.  I don't think she has been in the picture for many, many years.

Doug married Magdalina Marrs in the early 1970's, making the Marrs kids Velma's step-grandchildren.  The kids have been extremely good to Doug and Velma through the years.
