Betty Jean Stewart, 80, of Sedan, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.  She was born on January 6, 1931 in Anthony, Kansas to Graydon and Rita (Brown) Brittain.

She was born and raised in Sedan, graduating from Sedan High School.  After high school, she attended and graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas as a Registered Nurse.  She later received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chicago Tech in Chicago, Illinois.  She worked as a Registered Nurse for St. Francis Hospital in Wichita for twenty five years and also worked at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for twenty five years until her retirement in 1000.

She attended church at the Pleasant Valley Manor.  She was a member of the Sedan VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Sedan Business Women, and the Chautauqua County Genealogical Society.  She also enjoyed sewing, flowers, collecting dolls, and making all of her children's clothes.

She is survived by her husband, James Stewart of the home; two daughters, Melodee and husband, Ray Wolfe of rural Longton, Kansas and Elizabeth and Kris Stewart of Wichita, Kansas; four sons, Jim Jr. and wife, Tammy Stewart of Mayfield, Kansas, John Stewart of rural Longton, Kansas, Joseph Stewart of Sedan, Kansas, and Walter Stewart of Wichita, Kansas; one sister, Dorothy Witt of Colorado;  one brother, Jimmy Joe Brittain of Missouri; and fifteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters and her parents.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, Kansas with Pastor John Warring of the First Christian Church officiating.  Cremation has taken place, and a private inurnment will be held at a later date.  The family has suggested memorials  to the Sedan VFW Ladies Auxiliary.  Those remembrances can be sent to the David W.
